The idiot's guide to the AR-15 rifle (or an idiot building one)

Wow, that is a pretty good price man. The shops around here don't have much under $1200 and you have no say in the config.

That was the thing. The S&W I was looking at was $1100 and it wasn't EXACTLY the way I wanted it, so I would have ended up putting money into changing things.

This will be just the gun I want for a bit cheaper.

My wife and I agreed on getting a rifle...I may go that route just to keep the initial cost down. I was thinking Rock River or DPMS lower...but that is solely on recommendations from friends and not my own personal experience. No place to try them out here.

I'd go Rock River personally.

Hey shotgunner, could you point me towards some online resources for doing an AR build? Is there any good books out there to take a gander at?

Check this thread BW. Everything you need to know about building an AR, more or less.

Also, for anyone looking for very good lowers at an affordable price, check out Essential Arms. During the Obama madness you couldn't find a lower to save your azz. Essential is a fairly small shop that makes an honest living making excellent products.

They are super easy and you can save bukoo money, the only thing I haven't done is an upper, and I haven't taken any courses or anything, just a lot of tinkering and watching other people.

adman, I just checked the CAR and I was wrong it's not a Century Arms it's an EA. Even pulled out my old Marine arms manuals off the reference book shelf to do this thing. Gonna break the CAR down tomorrow I do believe to see if I can run down the problem with it.

I went the easy way. Smith & Wesson M&P 15A, Samson Star-C rails, Aimpoint ML3 & FDE Scope Coat, VLTOR FDE Mil-Spec Emod Stock, Magpul FDE MIAD Pistol Grip, Tapco FDE Vertical Grip & Surefire M951 weapons light & Magpul FDE Pmags.

I think I have about 2100.00 into it now. Wasn't cheap, but it shoots great and I'm happy with it.

Best, Les.

I have heard good things about the Eotechs but I have never had any first hand experience with them. Arent they battery powered?

man im getting really excited now. i keep thinking about how fun and cool itd be to build and own an ar 15. cant wait to keep reading!

Yeah, they are battery powered. But the newest "F" revision of them will run hundreds of hours on one set. Plus the new ones use AA batteries instead of the button cells.
