Hi folks!
We all know and appreciate this place, for alot of good reasons...generosity being one of the most evident ones. Generosity in giving away knowledge, opinions, thoughts and insights...and knives of course
So, a few days ago, I posted a thread in the sales section, to find a new home for my HJ6. I knew it wouldn't last very long (it's a wonderful knife), but the first reply surprised me for sure. One of our respected and beloved fellow members, Duncan, offered me to pay for the knife and asked me to host a giveaway thread. For all those who've ever been in contact with him, it's not easy to describe the enthusiasm and generosity that Duncan is able to spread around (I've been hit by his generosity as well, but that's another story :)). So, now the knife is here, waiting for a lucky winner ;)

For the (few) ones who are unfamiliar with it, it's one of the best (in my opinion) SFO by our friend Charlie, a harness jack pattern based on GEC's #66 frame, ebony covers, 1095 steel, brass liners, 3,5" closed. What numbers do not say, though, is that it's a beautiful slipjoint, and is willing to move somewhere.
Now, the rules... :p
As I was emailing Duncan, I realized that, unlike most regulars here, we both live on islands (although on opposite sides of the globe...and both probably count more sheep than people :p)...but maybe all of you have visited an island, or dream of visiting one, or have some island related story to tell. Oh, and pictures to post, of course ;)
Duncan and I still have to decide when the giveaway will end, and how we will pick the winner...but entries are welcome from now on :)
As for islands...well, this is mine :)

Very generous of you both! I don't live anywhere even remotely close to an island but my daughter and family used to live on an island. New York City.
Thank you,
Bob

"Here be Meakos" not sure but I think we used to be the worlds largest island. That got changed to "island continent" because its bigger than Europe -er makes sense- now I think its simply a continent-we are very continental. Also we have the second highest sheep population in the world after China -looking at the stats no-one comes close to them for sheep especially New Zealand who are rank outsiders in sixth position. This is of great concern to me as I love Kiwi /Sheep jokes and would not like to put in the embarrassing position of hving to translate them into Chinese or worse... Australian:eek:

Well, Fausto, we live about as far from the ocean as is worldly possible here in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Center of the USA. But since my wife travels for her job, we are blessed with many airline miles and hotel and car rental points, so we get to travel, cheap! Consequently, we have fallen head over heals for our own US island of Hawaii. Here are a few favorite pictures of that beautiful paradise.

Duncan and Fausto, thanks for the wonderful giveaway! I look forward to more beautiful photos.

I don't have any pictures, but when I was 12 or 13 I lived in Costa Rica for a month with my brother. It was a really awesome experience, and two of my favorite memories from it involve islands.

First, we swam to check out an island a ways off the coast. It turned out to be jellyfish water, but the islands had cool little pools you could sit in. I'm pretty sure it's where my brother later proposed to his wife.

Second, we went to the massive volcanic island of ometepe (sp?) In Nicaragua. It's a beautiful place, but what I really remember is seeing a new kind of poverty I had never encountered. People there still, at the time at least, live in huts thatched with green leaves. Really interesting place, it also had a couple bigger towns with lots of foreigners of all types.

Anyway, I saw that on your sale thread, really generous of both of you. I've been wanting a harness knife, but kinda put it on the backburner.

This is Matsushima island in Japan well known for its view of pine trees. Never been there yet, but I sure will.

I have the the thread where this give away was created and I was amazed. this can happen only in our forum. Good on you Duncan and Fausto.

Wow, everyone's island pictures are so beautiful. I don't have any islands like that in my life, but when I was a child, I lived in Pennsylvania and my aunt would rent a place on Long Beach Island, New Jersey every summer. It was just a narrow sand bar full of summer tourists where pretty much nothing happened but I loved it. That was back when a kid could just walk around and do nothing all day. Swimming, flying kites, riding my bike around. I would walk down to the bay side at sundown to watch the old men pull up their crab traps. (Had to jump up on a bench more than once when the crabs spilled out as I was often barefoot:) ) I'm getting all nostalgic now........

Anyway, very generous giveaway, thanks. That awl looks like a useful tool, I'm in.

ETA: The most important island in my life would have to be Ellis Island, where my grandparents and great grandparents came to America! I wouldn't be here today (or anywhere, most likely) if they hadn't.

Well I thought I'd post another photo. This is Miyajima island, I visited there about 12 years ago and will sure come back. The island is in the western part of the Inland Sea of Japan, located in the northwest of Hiroshima Bay. It is popularly known as Miyajima, the Shrine Island. The island is one of Hayashi Razan's Three Views of Japan. Miyajima is famous for the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

An Islanders giveaway? How can I miss that! I'm very proud of my wee island.

Eilean Leòdhais (Isle of Lewis) part of the archipelago of the Na h-Eileanan Siar (Western Isles) of Scotland, population of about 18000 and less than 700 square miles.

What a lovely idea Duncan :) Great stuff guys

I think you've all heard and seen plenty about my island in these past six months, but here's another pic anyway (I'm afraid I can currently only access a few right now).

Good luck everyone :)

As for sheep population, the thing about Sardinia (and NZ, I suppose) is the sheep/people ratio :p
Beautiful pictures and stories folks. Being an islander myself, for some reasons I always loved visiting islands far away from home, be it the Indian Ocean or the Caribbeans. I'd sure love to visit Hawaii and Japan and Thailand and the Hebrides...time to hunt for another visa stamp ;)
And yes, that picture was taken in Sardinia, a relatively big island surrounded by lots of wonderful small islands :)
Keep entering folks!

Not an entry but felt compelled to share in the islanders thread having spent almost my entire life living on an island. Here's one from the beach on the northern side of Long Island. The view looking north across the sound. If you swim to the other side you'd be in Connecticut (just joking, don't try it lol).

Last Sept took a day trip with some friends out on a boat. Here's a view of southern Manhattan.

Liberty Island

And a view of Brooklyn as we passed under the Brooklyn Bridge. Brooklyn is 1 of the 4 counties on Long Island (Kings county (Brooklyn), Queens County, Nassau and Suffolk County)

How Generous! Please count me in.

I was assigned to Hawaii twice during my Army career. Youngest daughter was born there at Tripler Army Medical Center during our first assignment there. Twenty-two months after leaving Hawaii from my first three-year assignment there, the Army sent me back for another three years. I fought it (seriously) but lost, and we packed up a returned to Hawaii.

Not an entry, but thanks for a cool thread!

I live in a neighborhood that was originally a fishing village of Croatian immigrants from the Adriatic Sea, many from the island of Vis. They settled here to fish these islands that reminded them of home, just a little colder. From our home, we look across the Salish Sea to Lummi and Orcas islands.

I would be happy to live there, but my wife is a city girl. Manhattan island is more her speed.

This knife is a beauty, and this is a generous GAW, but it would not see pocket time with me, and I don't want to take away someone else's chance. So not an entry, but I am really enjoying the thread!
