The islanders thread ;) - winner announced!

Tanzania, its a long story...

Nice picture, except that the knife is a modern design with thumb stud and modern lock.
We'll leave it up because the background is really gorgeous.

New Zealand has NO snakes my friend :-)

Whereas Australia has 8 out of the top 15 including the first 6 most venomous land snakes* (Jeremy Clarkson voice) IN THE WUURLLLLD!. Western Diamond Back Rattler ranked #18-.at #17 is the Eastern Small Eyed Snake-I found one in my back garden last year which had been dropped from a great height by a Kookaburra (the worlds greatest bird).
They'll never admit it but New Zealanders are jealous of that. You would be to if your toughest creature was a parrot that has been known to eat meat.
Legend has it that it was the sight of Duncans legs that blinded the snakes and made them all swim across to Australia.:D

*Thats not to say the most dangerous or highest death rates simply venom power.
Hey Duncan whats the little railway? it reminds of a place i visited there once long ago -they had a little mine loco which took you up the hill.narrow gauge railways are fantastic.

Lol - yeah Meako - I had to unsheathe those two Strobe lights just in case we got lost!

Australia is known to be the land of snakes - that has snakes :D

The little railway is called the Rain Forest Express Train. The Waitakere Ranges is a absolutely gorgeous spot - but it also harbours terrible and sad secrets, there are MANY bodies believed to be buried in the vast Rugged Ranges - this is actually a fact and not tales, Drug dealers and their victims lie up in the hills, as well as heavily suspected abducted woman - one of the cases was on a T.V series called "Sensing Murder" where they used Famous Aussie and New Zealand psychics to try and solve the murders-quite eerie how factual some of the facts turn out to be...but that's another topic I guess.

Keep them coming :)
Now, talking about islands I have visited in my life (poor pictures, I know..) :p

WOW, neat to hear that's true. I already knew about Australia, most recently reinforced by watching the late Steve Irvin. IF I had 1/10 of ONE % of his 'comfort level' around dangerous critters, I'd be excited, LOL. I grew up in S. Florida, with occasional gators and copperhead vipers. Thank the good Lord that gators are lazy by nature, or there would be far, far more injuries and death. As for the face to face with the snake, in our compost pile...well, let's just say I never knew I could run backwards!

Wow, some really great ones here.
Pete, your wedding at sea looks like it was awesome! I would love to have done something similar. In-laws may have gone for it, but I dunno about my folks. ;)

What a nice gesture, Duncan; you're such a gent! Fausto, that is a lovely HJ! And, great idea for a contest.
You're both outstanding dudes, but I've felt your generosity(ies) before, so please, "not an entry" from me.

Here's is an island close to my home that I really like.
This is Tangier Island, VA. It's in the Chesapeake Bay. It's so small, that there are no cars (well, one... the cops have one.), and everybody drives around on golf carts. The culture is so insular, that there is a distinct dialect there, which I've heard literary-types refer to as "the closest thing that remains, to Old English." There are 3 or 4 last names on the island. Everyone is either a Parks, a Pruitt, or a Crockett. Life is really like a window into the past, in a lot of ways, on Tangier Island. Most of the men are watermen, both fishing and merchant vessels. The community is totally tied in with the water. Very unique place. It's really something special.
It's a gorgeous place, and the folks are very loving. If any of you international folks ever visit the east coast of the US, I recommend checking it out. I can introduce you to someone with whom you can stay, and who can show you around.

I don't have any pics of my own, so I hope nobody minds if I post these so you can get the idea. All photos hosted on the website, http://www.tangierisland-va.com/tangierisland_photos"]tangierisland-va.com

Ah, nothing like being near the sea to gather your thoughts.....we live on the mainland, but have a weekend place on the island (about an hour and a half away). Our island, Bogue Banks, runs east to west and faces the Atlantic on the south. We are in an area known as the Crystal Coast (south of the Outer Banks). View looking out to sea from our balcony (with and without a knife!) View from the boat looking at a couple of the famous wild horses on Shackleford Banks, and the Cape Lookout lighthouse on Core Banks - these are tiny islands (1/4 mile wide and up to 25 or so miles long). OH

Wonderful pics, love the aerial. When I lived in the Boston area I missed the country, but I felt the call of the sea. It's a timeless culture all it's own.

This is Brampton Island. in the Whitsunday Islands -went there nearly 30 years ago .

Also Magnetic Island so named because it threw Capt. Cooks compasses out out of whack.

Not an island dweller myself, but my wife is from the Philippines (northern Luzon). Here is a picture that I took during my visit there

Not any sheep there, but more than a few of these

Most of the rice is grown in fields in the lowlands, but these are more interesting

Time tu bump this up a bit. Such a knife deserves more entries ;)
Little story about the Asinara, a small island at the NW end of Sardinia, named after a local breed of white donkeys (asino in Italian):
gtx32mc.jpg

For a few decades and until the late 90's, this island (formerly occupied by a small group of fishermen and their families) was chosen for a maximum security prison; for more than 20 years, the sea was the only border of the prison island, were criminals (mostly mafia bosses and such) lived at close contact with the people who worked at the facility (police guards and so on). A colleague of mine told me many stories about the place; his father was the prison's doctor, and convicts used to help his family out as domestic workers. Although the prison was filled with big time criminals, he said he doesn't recall big hassles there. Only one convict (a known Sardinian bandit) managed to escape during the whole history of the prison. Now the island is part of a regional park, and finally people are allowed to actually reach the island and walk among the beauties of a place that was reserved for criminals only. Here's a few pictures of the place (I will be visiting the island for the first time this summer):
