The islanders thread ;) - winner announced!

im in on this contest. who doesn't love a good jack? my goodness I have been admiring all the pictures here! so many new travel plans to consider for the future. iv been up in Maine for a camping trip but stayed in a fishing community for a few days afterward. we got a boat and explored a bunch of islands that appeared to have been used for quarrying stones. no photos unfortunately as is common when I travel, but if anyone ever sees me out and about, youll recognize me by a very old ocean city hat and if you ask whats in my pockets, youll find a peanut in a coin pouch, a zippo, and a tobacco pouch and tin. happy hunting!

Here's a picture of Grand Island, N.Y. It's where I grew up and lived around or near it for 52 years. Now Florida is my home but GI will always be with me.

This is also the first pic I downloaded on my new Lenova carbon fiber Think Pad.
I'm in!

Wow so many awesome pics. Im a 20 yr resident of the island of Kauai ( Nice shots Black Mamba I recognize both of those spots and am a Missouri native also.) The picture in my previous post is the Hanalei Bay which Black mamba posted a arial shot of. Anyhow here are just a few photos of my favorite of the Hawaiian Islands and home.

This is actually from a trip to the Big Island when I got to see the lava flow, which is a pretty life changing experience. This is as close as you could get (safely).

Thanks for the chance to participate and for all the great photos.

I made the choice to live on an island. Fled the cold winters of Edmonton to live in Nanaimo, BC. Here is a shot I took of a sail boat going by at one of our lovely parks here in Nanaimo.

Just because it is still snowing this time of year you left??

The first flight I ever took was to an island. Head north until you hit the Arctic Ocean, then keep going until you hit lane again, only three doors away from Santa! My wife spent ten years living on Victoria island, and had to show it to me between university semesters. It was before the digital age, so I'll have to take some pictures of pictures when I get a chance.

Thank you for the offer.

I grew up on Staten Island NY, here's a picture I took a few years ago of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, SI is on the left side, Brooklyn is on the right.
Thanks for the chance Fausto!

WOW...once again Fausto - thank you very much - this idea of an Island Theme Giveaway is just fantastic - what totally outstanding photos!!! some beautiful stunning locations shown.

Heres a few from Sues and I first Hike we did a few weeks ago-the weather was okish..but as we climbed up to the Waitakere Ranges..the clouds were low-and when we started hiking-it just rained all the time lol...here are a few pics-not so good because of the weather..

Making our way down to the water...

Me fooling around trying to do a selfie with the rain - you cant see the rain so well..

Sue - who looks somewhat like a colourful Ninja by a small waterfall along the way...

Stop along the way under shelter-get out the wee Billy and make a good cuppa-man that was good under thos conditions-raining - cold, but we found shelter and cooked up a great cup of tea - it was a awesome feeling - my HJ was with me

Part of the way was a lonely Railway trac we walked along ( not in service that day )

Our other Hike was the other day, that was stunning - but very hard work - but worth it - we made our way down to a lovely small waterfall - with a little pool underneath - you could have swam in it - so we stopped on the rocks beside the pool set up our billy and had a cuppa there...

Yeah...I am working on the Tan lol...New Zealand is a beautiful spot - indeed a lovely Island - c'cmon over guys and gals!

I have something of a love affair with islands. I would love to live somewhere tropical...

Growing up and living in Southern California, I have pretty good access to the Channel Islands. Santa Cruz Island is a hiker's paradise; just wish I had a camera with me on my few trips out there. Been to Catalina once. In 2008, the better half and I spent a week on Maui for our honeymoon. Here is a Vic Farmer at the top of Haleakala, which is something like like 10,000 feet above sea level, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

I want desperately to go back, but not until the kids are bit older.

Having already been the recipient of his generosity in the past, all I can say is thanks again to Fausto for a great GAW and best of luck to all the entrants. Great pics so far. Here is my Sardinian jewel.

A most awesome and generous GAW hosted by two of our finest contributors!:thumbup:
This is not an entry though, sorry guys, but I have recently been gifted a lovely diamond harness jack by Mr. Waynorth himself. But I love islands. My wife and I met through scuba diving, and we just live to visit different islands and dive the ocean depths and see what lives beneath the waves. These few poor shots are from one of my absolute favorite spots that we have visited.

Kenny the Cat Man, one of the kindest and most soft spoken fellows I have ever met, he cares for the stray cat and dog population of the island. He single handedly feeds and cares for about 30 cats and a dozen dogs with funds from donations and from his business of repairing bicycles which are the major means of transportation on this island along with electric golf carts.

sunset from the dive shop, last day of the trip, always a sad day that one is, but then, another adventure awaits :)

Thanks Fausto and Duncan for hosting this great GAW, now I need to go back and look at all the pics from cool islands people have shared

Some awesome pics here for sure, and a pleasure to hear the stories with them...I too am an Islander, I have to share N.Z with the Clansman and Kris NZ ...and (Meako living there in West island).....
R8Shells comment about Ellis island got me thinking..I was born in the Gilbert and Ellis group of islands..Ocean island is i believe the closest island to the Equator and the deepest port on Earth (1500 feet?)....It was less than 2 square miles square and was taken as a War prize off the Japanese in WW2
The island contained the purest phosphate in the world, and was used to fertilise Australia,New Zealand and Britain after the War...Naturally the natives were well payed and treated?......My first passport says that im a Banaban from Kiribati....Islanders rock.......not an entry thank you sir....................Fes

Wow... great pics everyone :) Thanks for sharing.

I have never been on an island, IIRC. Between me and the next sea is whole Germany in one direction and the Alps in the other direction... I´ve been to Norway about six years ago but I always was on Trondheims Fjord there. (No island as well)

Though I´d like to enter, if possible :)

The foggy bavarian are my favorite place to spend time

It's a peninsula, not an island but I lived in Hull Mass. as a teenager. I used to camp out on some of the harbor islands. This country boy would get up in the morning on a camp out and see the Boston skyline drinking his coffee. The island with a bridge to it in the first pic had a Nike missile base on it at the time with the domed radar and all.

I lived on the hill to the right in that first pic. You are looking right at it in the second pic.

Not an entry. I'd love that knife but I wouldn't be able to use it and carry it right now.

Well it's called a cape, depending on who you talk to, some call it a island others a cape , I'm surrounded by saltwater, connected to the mainland by two bridges, no bridges and you're swimming. Some folks never cross the bridge to the mainland, in fact for some it's a sense of pride never having to cross the bridge, they say "why do I need to leave? everything I ever needed is right here".

The oldest seaport in America and still a working one supplying seafood around the globe.

I was married at sea, my marriage certificate reads something like 42*36'6.7"N 70*39'56"W which is just off of 10 Pound Island,

lots of coves to spend the day hanging out.

we even have our own sea serpent immortalized on Cressy's beach.

I've been seeing all the lovely places you all come from, but I'm just stuck on this island with meako...... :D Kidding, of course.

Australia is a lovely place, and would encourage all of you to consider a holiday here, and to especially to New Zealand as well!
(Actually maybe not, I think Australia might have a tough time competing with New Zealand's beauty. Just Australia....;))
