The islanders thread ;) - winner announced!

I do not recall the name of this island but it was a small one near Malindi Kenya. One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.

Never seen such an area of natural beauty so undeveloped and full of natural flora and fauna...I hope it remains that way.

The water was so clear and blue we could see massive shells on the bottom of the ocean from the shore. Some of the local children who were fishing with their families pleaded with us to pay them a few shillings to dive down and retrieve them. We thought better but did allow them to convince us to buy some of their homemade coconut wine.

I hope to visit again someday.

Great Idea Fausto - an Island Giveaway - and its thank YOU Sir for all that you do, I know for a fact that I can speak for all of us here we appreciate everything you do here in Traditionals.

New Zealand has to be my favourite Island - many times I say that we are so lucky to live in such a great country, here are a few shots I took when Sue and I were getting Married-and we took Sues Family around the place to have a looksee!

Here is a small Bay North in New Zealand, Mahuranghi scenic Reserve - a lovely spot - not much of a photo - so sorry about that...

A very famous spot - tucked in the beautiful Coromandel Bays, this spot is called Cathedral Cove - a lovely spot - its a wee bit of a walk down quite a few stairs to get down to the beach - Coromandel is a very rugged - but stunningly beautiful area - I always say "when I win Lotto - I will live there" lol

You walk through this huge beautiful arch - stunning beach both sides....

A typical New Zealand Scene -

I will pop in here and throw some more photos in - from our hike last week - I lost all mine when downloading them :grumpy: but Sue took a couple with her phone - so I will grab them off her and put these in as well.

Once again Fausto, I feel a bit embarrassed because when I saw this beautiful 66 HJ up for sale - I thought that everyone in Traditionals must see this-as often we all come in too late when the knife is sold - so this way this stunning knife-and these ARE stunning knives believe me -can be fairly put up for grabs for everyone who wants to participate - cant get better than that.
Folks...Fausto is making it out that its all me here doing this, it is in fact the other way round - this time I am afraid to say that "Fausto speak with Forked Tongue " :D
Hint...if you ever find looking at photos- that the photo may be too big or too small - press down your ctrl button at the same time press either your - or + button to enlarge or down-scale your photo.

Good luk everyone - this is of of Charlies absolute beauties - get in here or be square :)
Ok..my dog is squeaking big time because she can see I have finished my breakfast - so she knows it Walkies time - and she is NOT happy I am "talking " on the computer - gotta go
Good luck everyone -Fausto my friend...thank you so so much for all that you do.

Beautiful spots and a great gesture.

My favorite islands are rocks down in the middle of the river :D

Theres no place like home...

I lived in the Florida Keys for more than a decade, grew up there after moving from Oregon as a lad. It was wonderful wild and free place, with boats everywhere, incredible lightning storms, and fishing like you wouldn't believe. It was pretty common to be pulling up a fish as big as oneself and have a BIGGER fish or shark rocket through the water and bite it in half. I soaked up plenty of the "eccentric pirate/Hemingway" attitude of the Conchs (as the Keys people call themselves), and the rig-it-up-yourself style typical of folks from islands or other isolated places.

The most striking thing about the Keys were the vivid neon colors all around. The water was electric cobalt blue or deep green, or completely clear; the birds, bugs, tropical flowers and especially the fish blazed like the high-dollar crayons in the big box. The sunsets there are legendary, and almost every evening was better than a fireworks show.

I've always been an islander since then, and though I'm back to Oregon now with it's (equally beautiful) soft greens and grays, I still can't resist crossing a river to fish from a tiny mid-stream island and catch "huge" trout!

Fausto, Duncan, this is a wonderful giveaway!! Thank you both for making this happen! not an entry - I'm deathly afraid of the ocean and the numerous mysteries that lurk beneath it's crashing waves...:D though, I'd certainly like to visit New Zealand and Sardinia. :)

My parents live about two hours away from me so me and my family are here every weekend. You can find me with a book in my hammock (that's me in there now), or a spear in the water behind.

I made the choice to live on an island. Fled the cold winters of Edmonton to live in Nanaimo, BC. Here is a shot I took of a sail boat going by at one of our lovely parks here in Nanaimo.

Closest island to me in a lake.

It is a small little island with a picnic table and a pirate flag on it.

Great giveaway.

I've been to Hawaiian islands, and to Fanning Island in the Kirabati chain, but don't have any digital pictures.

My most interesting island time was on Koh Tang off the coast of Cambodia in 1993. Led a team surveying the site of a (then) future excavation and recovery of those lost/KIA while attempting rescue of the crew of the SS Mayaguez in 1975.

i dont live on an island but i live in a coastal town in maine and work in a boat yard. this pic was a morning that my boss told me to go take this boat out to burn fuel because someone had over filled the fuel tanks and there was fuel in the vent lines and the new fuel gauges were not reading correctly. this day was a big deal to me because it was the first time my boss trusted me to take a customers boat out.....the most important customer, the owner of the boatyard! anyway snapped these pics from my phone

and for knife content my texas jack and my first ball in cage

im in and thank you for your generosity and good luck to everyone.

Well it's called a cape, depending on who you talk to, some call it a island others a cape , I'm surrounded by saltwater, connected to the mainland by two bridges, no bridges and you're swimming. Some folks never cross the bridge to the mainland, in fact for some it's a sense of pride never having to cross the bridge, they say "why do I need to leave? everything I ever needed is right here".

The oldest seaport in America and still a working one supplying seafood around the globe.

I was married at sea, my marriage certificate reads something like 42*36'6.7"N 70*39'56"W which is just off of 10 Pound Island,

lots of coves to spend the day hanging out.

we even have our own sea serpent immortalized on Cressy's beach.

What a cool idea, and what remarkable pictures! Here's a few from my favorite island: Hydra. It's a tiny island in the Greek archipelago, which allows no motorized vehicles except for garbage pickup. Most people walk, but there are some donkey-taxis available if anyone's got soft feet. After visiting this place, I immediately revised my lottery-win plan: I will harbor-hop the Mediterranean on a sailboat. Maybe I'd get to see some of YOUR amazing islands then too!

As a side note, it was seeing a HJ6 on this forum that convinced me I NEEDED a HJ. I was lucky enough to score one of the HJ7's in chestnut bone and it has been everything I could have hoped for. Knives will come and knives will go, but I expect that HJ7 (or some other HJ) will be in my pocket on the day I depart this earth.

On with the pictures....

I'll play, though I only have one island experience. In 1995 I took my girlfriend (now wife) on a trip to Puerto Rico. We stayed at a Grateful Dead themed bed & breakfast near the El Yunque rainforest. We spent a whole day hiking in the rainforest - even after being warned about chupacabras by an elderly woman that gave us directions. The picture is of me on top of one of the peaks in the rainforest. In the distance you can see the coast.

The wife & I hope to visit Key West in the future. I'm a huge Hemingway fan.
