The jackknife starter kit- GAW over winners announced!

That's true, and something I hadn't thought of. Maybe I'll have to try it on different things, and post up here or start a new thread. Containing knife content of course! I have to take the time to learn to post pictures this weekend, to show off my luck and gratitude. As well I'm contemplating how to do a couple of GAWs, and I'll definitely need pictures for those.
Thanks, Neal

Nice Neal. Congrats on the lucky light package. That is the model light that I got for my daughters' keychains. I remind them regularly that they should always have a blade, light, and cash-stash on them (or at least with them) at all times.

Still pretty stoked for my incoming Peanut and four way. [emoji41]. This was so cool for fishcakes to do.

I just got my package, and since I've already got the p-38 and Sears 4-way my dad swiped them and put them into his pocket. I'm sure he'll get a ton of use out of them so thanks from him as well.
I did inadvertently mod my peanut though, there was some sort of film flaking off of the plastic scales which I picked off.
it took some paint with it which gave me this cool look which I actually like.

BTW are the blades stainless or carbon steel ?

Hickory-mine's doing the same thing! Just haven't picked it all off yet. Good little keep yer hands busy project. :D Interested to see what it looks like without it-same as yours or ... I'm guessing carbon, don't you think?
Thanks, Neal

I'm hoping it's carbon steel, but I've only had 1 brand new carbon steel knife and that was 11yrs ago.
BTW I forgot to mention that I thought there would be some residue left on the scales or something so I used a toothbrush and degreaser, but my fingernail was scratching the paint off anyways. You may not get the same look without scrubbing, but who knows.

Yeah... The coating they used on those shell handles isnt very durable. Sorry about that guys, theres not much i could do about it after theyd been sitting in a box for 20- 30 years.

Im pretty sure the blades are carbon, like, 99.99% sure. I didnt check though. So cut up an apple or orange and let us know! I didnt wanna do that and patina up someones new knife.

Glad everyones enjoying their goodies!

I'm having fried chicken for dinner, so I'll let everyone know if my blade turns blue.

BTW I'm glad that the plastic film on the scales was flaking off, because the knife looks better now.for being 29yrs old at the very latest some flaking plastic film is nothing.
If I'm not mistaken the earlier knives simply had paint on the metal shells instead of a white plastic shell on top of the metal shelk, so I'd guess these are probably from some time in the 70's until the last use of this tang stamp in 1988.

Awesome. Enjoy it man!

Well then everything worked out ok after all. Hopefully everyone feels the same.

I'm not at all displeased about mine. No worries Fishcakes! Really, could not be happier!👍
Thanks, Neal

Very cool. :D

I actually got a goofy smile on my face seeing that patina. Imperial did carbon right. Ive only got one of their folders, but man does it get crazy sharp.

They sure did, I only had a hatchet, h6 fixed blade, and a Barlow before this and they're all in imperials awesome carbon steel.
This may sound funny, but my Chicken actually tasted better knowing that I was getting a nice patina on my knife.

Not funny at all. Ive noticed the same phenomenon with steak, pears, and apples too

Awesome, I hope you love yours as much as I love mine which has been in my pocket since I got it.

This really is a great combo. Spent just a few minutes on the Sharpmaker and took the edges to arm hair sharpness. Only took a few minutes, and was ready for the pocket. Sweeeet!

I used the bottom ring of a coffee mug which didn't take long either.

But that's what I love about imperial, the steel easily takes a great edge and the blades are so thin that they'll still slice real well even when they get a little dull.

I just stumbled into an interesting and kind of cool new look. I noticed the plastic on my peanut starting to peel on the pile side. I plucked a little bit off being careful not to dig too deep. But it was still pretty intact on the mark side. But delaminating over the jigging.

Anyway, my silver wedding ring needed to have some scratches buffed out. So as long as I was heading downstairs, I thought I'd hit the peanut springs to smooth out a few patina pocks. The first couple taps on the buffer pulled up some of the plastic along the back. The next one pulled some of the dark color, giving that two tone look seen above in Hickory's pics. Interesting, but the change had happened, so might as well continue with the spine buff. After a few more seconds, I saw a couple of glimmers from the tool light reflecting. I looked more closely, and sure enough, it was jigged metal just under a thin layer of soft plastic. So I finished off both sides. [emoji2] Turned out pretty neat. Unlike anything in my collection.

You've got that right!!!

In the 50's, Imperial was a huge name in pocket knives, and of the tons of small two blade jacks that were the pocket knife of the era, the carbon steel that Imperial's used was right up there with the Schrade Old Timer line of pocket knives. They got scary sharp with very little effort, and they stayed that way through the workday. A light stropping that night or a touchup on the bottom of a coffee mug, and they were ready for another workday.

I truly believe that Imperial was a greatly under rated knife company.
