The (knife) chopper list....

Okay - I'll reluctantly add BK7.....But I'm worried I'll start openining a whole can of suggestions in the 7" range (I already noted the Chopweiler exception earlier)

Hey Gerberblades - I don't speaky 'da Busse - whats HHFSH :)

Thank you Old Physics - I'm chasing these down now...Edited - according to his website the largest elk hunter is 5" - is there an older 8" version?

You've got the monster nessmuk listed from Dan Koster, don't forget the Survivor! That will be one beast of a chopper.

Personally, I don't consider the BK-7 a chopper (nothing personal to you guys that do) and yes I have one.

Since Beckers, that are no longer available, are being listed, let's not forget the beautiful and much coveted Cincinatti Machax by Becker. (9" blade)

Christof, damnit man. Are you going to make me chase you all over the this forum? Specs man, I demand specs.:D Thanks friend. You must be pulling these out of some vault w/ the intent to entice!

8) Randall Knives - Bowie's & Toothpicks (http://www.randallknives.com/)

If you mean the 12” Randall Model 13, it’s no chopper. I admit, I’ve never tried chopping with one. That’s because it’s so obviously not fitted to that task. There isn’t nearly enough blade to do the work, except close to the quillons.

The Randall big bowies are probably another story, but I’ve never handled one.

OAL 12.5
blade 8.125 inches, 1/8 inch L6. convex grind.
depth of blade is 1 7/8 at the top of the clip, 1 5/8 halfway along the clip. Balance point is middle of the first finger past the handle. Still good control, plenty of "choppability". This handle design lets you "choke back" on the grip a bit for chopping. I put some test photos up on a "little big knife" thread where I went through 3 inch branches in no time.

I keep thinking of filing the thumb ramp on that one. Guess i'll ask whoever I sell it to.

With pleasure!

EDIT - Does Ray have a website url for the listing page?

There are many custom makers that produce big choppers. I am working on one now for an instructor at Camp Lejeune. With that said, no list would be complete without Jason Knight, Daniel Winkler, Dickie Robinson, Dan Farr, Lin Rhea, Ray Kirk, Matt Roberts, and Adam Desrosiers and that's just a scant few of the metal pounders. Matt Roberts is also producing a "mid tech" line made from Crucible 3V. I am using Ray Kirk's "forward mounted lanyard" design on my knife. The guard will have a short upper "ear" with a hole drilled in it for the lanyard.

How can you mention Ontario knives, without including this bad boy? 10" carbon steel. With sawback, no less! The SP8.

You beat me to it. If you don't mind carrying 2 lbs of knife it is hard to beat. It's ugly so you don't mind abusing it. Mine was shaving sharp out of the box.
That is my chopper although I really want a Gossman or Ray Laconico just because I like 'em.
