The Knife Life (Minor Topics and Random Stuff Thread)

im trying to talk my girlfriend into me getting another knife " but hun i dont have any plain and simple gentleman knives i need something that is plain and simple and wont attract attention when im in public"

I am sure we can help you out, we need more information though. Do you prefer locking folders, or are slip joints okay? Are you thinking around the 3" blade length or shorter (smaller is better if you don't want to draw attention). What is your budget?

i made a post already on this forum, looking for a straight foward ti handled flipper 3" blade deep carry preferred as little flash as possible

under 200$, im looking at styles like the bradleys and sebenza but much much cheaper lol

i know i said flipper but that was a mistake i meant thumb stud, flippers are great too though

You can find a Bradley Alias for right around $200 on the exchange, but they don't come up very often. The Sage 2 is a great recommendation but no thumb stud. The Spyderco Techno is an option but probably too small... There is the CRKT Eros which is a very nice and super lightweight flipper and it's right at 3".

Well son of a gun! I guess I did win that one!
I will be expecting pics once you get it. The one in the video that he had been carrying looked really nice. Simple and clean, just how I like my knives. I hope I didn't ruin the surprise for you:p
Well I just ordered a reate hills. This will be my first decent flipper, and I couldn't be more excited.

Anyone sharpen a convex edge on a Sharpmaker? I realize it's not the most idea tool for the job, but it's what I am very used to using.
I am fairly certain I will just flatten the edge out, but if anyone has been in this same spot, I would love to hear how it went, and advice is always welcome!

Thanks in advance...

Oh you can bet on that! I'll post pictures and try to get some decent shots of it in use.

I really was surprised! I had NO idea I had won it. But, it's fine - you didn't ruin anything! Hell, if you hadn't told me about it, I might not have found out about it. I always get on the site on my phone, so it's hard to find threads I've posted on, and hard to see if anyone has sent me any messages.

Congrats on the Reate - I hear they are first rate.

My blue Ti screws are officially installed. My apologies, but I'm posting this pic everywhere haha.

Just wondering, why do you feel the sharp maker will flatten your edge? I touch up my convex edges on the SM and they stay convex but I only use the flats when doing so. Sandpaper and a plushy backing (like a mouse pad) is your best, aside from fully sharpening on strops using diamond pastes

You talking about a full convex grind or just a convex microbevel?

I've thought about that problem too... I'm reasonably profficient with Spyderco DoubleStuff I use for sharpening*, except the top knife in my pics on the last page (Nieto hunting knife) has hollow grind and convex edge- which made me think I should get a reasonably thick leather strop and paste to sharpen it on.

* I usually have no problem keeping shaving sharp edges on my knives (except for ZDP Endura and BM 710, which haven't needed sharpening so far), but I wouldn't call my edges as sharp as factory edges on Endura and 710.

Is there a major difference between steel coming from different countries or are they all produced to the same basic standards ?

You could be talking about one of two things. The quality of the steel, or the quality of the alloy.

The first one is analogous to whether steak, chicken, or fish tacos are better, while the second one is more about how well the fish tacos were made. If that makes any sense:D

For example, bohler m390 is a better alloy than Japanese AUS6, but if Japan made m390 as well, You would be able to compare how they were made by the different countries

As it stands right now, most companies produce proprietary steels or at best they produce steels that are only SIMILAR in chemical makeup to those of other companies in different countries (such as m390 and 204p)

So it's really hard to definitively answer your question

Keyman finally finished my scales! He says he shipped them out today.

Pretty excited.

I feel like I'm going to thin the herd pretty soon. Once I have the mini with cf sales and m390, plus the small seb and the sr2, I think I'll be pretty set:thumbup:

Oh I'm sure I'll keep some of the others just for variety, but really, most of the pocket time will go to one of these three (but mainly the seb:D)

Speaking of the seb....... I just can't get it out of my pocket! I'll be honest, when I first opened the package I felt my heart sink a little. It was smaller and thinner and lighter and etc etc etc than I thought it would be, and compared to the sr2 it felt TINY. It also wasn't uber smooth or fast.
But I'm happy to report that all of those things have been fixed and I'm now much more used to the size and ergos
People told me that sebenzas grow on you, but I didn't really believe them until it happened to me;)
