The knife that stopped you cold

I have been collecting customs since 1987, and productions since I was 8 years old(I am 62), and in the last couple of years into mega folders. A year, and a half ago I received my first Phil Boguszewski Pirhana with 3 1/2" wharencliffe blade that I instantly fell in love with, and decided I wanted another of his knives so ordered a Large Classic. I already had some large folders like REKAT Sifu, Camillus Maxx, and Aftermath but wanted a custom. Well a week ago after a long wait(1 1/2 years) the package came with the knife in it. I opened the box, and opened up the pouch, and pulled this knife out, and apologize but can't say what came out of my mouth :D I pulled out the Large Classic, and opened it, and what a gorgeous knife perfect in every way, and filled my hand like a large fixed blade. With an overall length of 10 1/4", and a 4 916" blade it made my Camillus Aftermath, and Strider AR look small because it is so thick, and wide.
I was in awe like never before with the knife with it being perfect in every way just like my other Boguszewski.
I have never had a knife make me feel so surprised when I pulled it out of the box like this one, and I have had hundreds of knives over the last 50+ years.
Just my .02 cents rounded off to a buck twenty.

I have two that I feel this way about,, the first is a Todd Begg Pantera folder,
he brought mine to Bladeshow this year, I wish you could have seen the guys sitting with me in the pit!! Very nice, solid knife, with textured blue anodized titanium inlaid in the handle, his signature grooves and tooling, very high 'WOW' factor.

The other is a Bobby Branton knife,,,' nuff said'

My Al Mar SERE 2000. It is built like a tank, but a precision-made tank. The action is amazing, it rivals any custom that I've handled.

The Kershaw Black and Gold Leek.
I was at a gun show checking out the CRKT Pesh Kabz when I saw the Leek sitting in the top of another case. "What's THAT?"

The finish is gorgeous and I can't stop wiping the fingerprints off. The clean, all-business click of the assisted opening makes me smile whenever I open it. The blade design is also perfect for 90% of what I use an EDC for.

For a folder, it would have to be my CRK flatground large Sebenza. It was my second Sebbie, having bought a small Mayonized Sebenza from Tom Mayo the year before.

For a fixed blade, it is actually a tie. One of them was a Strider PAB with a G10 handle that I waited for close to a year to be made. Hefting it out of the box and choppping with it for the first time was GREAT.

The other fixed blade was the first Simonich that I ever bought from the late great Rob Simonich. It was a Pikuni, and I use it as my pocket EDC every day.

I once won a auction on ebay about 5 years ago for a rare Keen Kutter floral whittler, it looked a little dark on the blades, but I took a chance. When I opened the package and saw the full blades & true patina and etch along with master craftsmanship from a bygone era...I literally started shaking at the realization that I should have bid way more, and could have missed this jewel. Now the sad part, I sold it later for a fair profit...still way below what it should have brought.

This one by Herb Derr had that effect on me when I saw it at his table in Scottsdale.I could not keep from handling it. I told the wife I was just going to look and you know how these things happen. I had no money or checks so I told Herb I'd be right back, went to the closest bank, got the cash , raced back and bought this beauty. It's his 2700 layer damascus in a 9.5 inch blade with oosic/madrome burl handle and a fileworked guard. It came with a great sheath by Herb with snakeskin insert.

I just took two more to show the sheath and some detail. I really should send this for a session with Coop.

I guess that would be the first knife I got from Himalayan Imports, a 15" Ang Khola with horn handles.

I've bought a lot of knives since then, but I still remember opening that package and my reaction.

It's kind of like losing your virginity. I don't expect it to happen again.

Easy, a long discontinued Busse Straight Handled Badger Attack 5/16" thick in A2. I was already collecting Busse, but this one simply took my breath away. Like it was custom fitted to my hand. This was made before the CNC and all was hand ground, even the grips. I EDC this blade and others like it. Same thing in 1/4" Infi which fits my hand 90 or 95% as well, but it would be the only Busse I would keep if only allowed 1. No other knife has ever come as close, custom or otherwise.

Ernest Emerson CQC-6...

Wanted/needed it for 10+ years...bought one, hasn't left me since.. :)

Severtecher - that 2nd photo, with the sheath, is amazing. Normally I'm not much of a fan of damascus, but there's something about the pattern mixed with the graceful shape of the blade that is really impressive.

Strider SnG - opened the box and began to drool for the next 15 mins.. it was like I had found the holy grail!

Haven't been too many production knives that have had that effect on me, but there have been many handmade pieces that have done that to me. Last year at the NYC show, there was a black handled fighter that SR Johnson had on his table. The feel of that blade was incredible.

Also, Mick Strider's nitemare blades do that to me, too.

Great stuff. I love knives.

This pic stopped me cold when I saw it on Ryu's site several years ago. I kept an eye out for it, never saw it anywhere. So I put a WTB post up. Several months later, got an e-mail saying it was available for a price that was about 1/4 what I had heard it was rumored to have sold for in a then recent transaction.

I bought it. No regrets.

This is among the Busse's few people realize are out there. D2 and pre-ban ivory.
