The Lake Minnetonka Record-Tying Ice-Out GAW!! WINNER IN POST #88!!

You’re hitting close to home there. I was born and raised about 15 minutes from Number 11, on the Wisconsin side. Granddad tells stories about wading across the river to Iowa before the dams were put in.
I've lived nearly my whole life on the upper Mississippi river. I am a 4th generation river rat. Right now I'm sitting in my office (company work truck) finishing out my day right along the banks above lock and dam 12. I'm lucky that I get to work outdoors and see this beautiful river every day. She's a little flooded at the moment. It's funny, I just saw this throwback article in the local paper about my grandpa Boyd, his brother and his brother-in-law. Though we all knew him as Dude. Everybody called him Dude. We figure my grandpa was about 15 at the time of this story.

Thank you for the chance!

Still not an entry. Still a fantastic GAW with fascinating photos.:thumbsup::cool::cool:

Here's a photo of an observation deck overlooking a little pond in the "ecosystem preserve" that's part of the campus at the college where I work. It's followed by a pic of some knives on the railing of the deck.

Small world eh! Barge got loose last week and piled up on lock and dam 11. They just got the dam reopened yesterday.

Here are a few pics of hauling on ice. My cabin burned down in a forest fire. It was 8.5 miles across the water (or ice) from the nearest road. Here a few pictures of hauling in building materials and hauling out the burned remains. Also a couple of pics looking out from where the cabin used to sit. For knife content I have included my display case of Keen Kutters.

Danno, Fantastic display, all around. But this one of the knives caught my eye. Particularly, the toothpick in the top right corner... How long is that thing OAL?

I have always been drawn to the pattern, but I haven't owned one. I have a feeling that this particular one should be the one I track down. Is it a fairly rare or common pattern for the brand?

Sorry to hear about your cabin, Dan, but thanks for the interesting post! Is the plan to haul supplies in winter then rebuild in summer?

If so, they don't say so. I expect they got some inspiration from Mora, but it says Russell Dexter Great White Edge on it. I'll have another look.

It was the sheath which particularly caught my eye, they look identical to the old Frost's and Swedish Army Knife (also Frost's) sheaths

Certainly not just ANY knives, Jack, but I was trying to avoid the appearance of "lording it" over those less fortunate than myself regarding lambsfoot holdings!:D

:D

I've never seen this Dexter before or since. Maybe their sheath homage crossed the line and got a cease-and-desist letter from Frost's. (Or maybe nobody bought these Dexters.)

The toothpick is 5" closed and 9" OAL. That one is a Keen Kutter, likely made by Walden or Winchester.

Yes, I have most of the materials there, just waiting for the ice to go out to start construction again.

I wondered if they just bought a load of them from Frost's  I still have a few knives with that sheath, and it has never worked for me. Nor Frost's I guess, as they eventually dropped the design

Late to the party but I'll play. Oft times referred to as "The Sagebrush Sea".

Water bodies around here tend to be contained by something. The horses getting some snorkeling in.

I mean who would put a water trough in a lake?

I was worried about the goldfish making a break for it.

Not an entry, but an avid follower of the thread!!:thumbsup::D
Here's an early morning view of Lake Huron from the deck of the cabin we've rented for a week or two each August for more than 25 years. The woods across the water are on Big LaSalle Island, one of the Les Cheneaux Islands in Lake Huron off the south coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula a few miles east of the Straits of Mackinac.

Here's a shot later in the day, looking in the same general direction, with a Wenger Esquire I bought at a flea market while on vacation in the U.P.:

Thanks for the opportunity Barrett!

Here is a picture of the Illinois River (home of Red neck fishing
) from Grand View Drive in Peoria Heights Illinois, taken with Pearl in hand. As far as the Asian Carp (an evading species) in the link, it is really bad in certain spots. My limited experience on the river is the hull of the boat, especially aluminum hulls, hitting the waves excites them to jump. It is quite an experience to have them land on the boat or go whizzing by your head. They are nasty slimy and ugly. I do think the Asian Carp population explosion has helped the Bald Eagle population in the area though. Driving to work one day I saw a Bald Eagle that was struggling to clear the bridge with what looked like a huge Asian Carp in its talons.

Here is a picture of a fishing knife. I have this GEC and a Case version. My buddy has a cabin in Wisconsin where we take fishing trips. Since I am not really a true fisherman, I'm thinking of giving the GEC to one of my buddies or brother through a game chance and keeping the Case in my tackle box.

Too bad there’s not a provision for a tilde (~) on an English keyboard.
LOL!
