The LRK+ Mod Discussion and Pic Thread

I clocked out early at work today & stayed & worked on my LRK.
I glued up the scales & liners, got the pins sanded down to where they fit right & rough sanded the handle & the mating surfaces of the scales/liners,on the 36 grit belt.
I also streamlined the blade a bit by grinding down the top hump on the drop point.
I'll go back tomorrow & drill pin holes, shape the front of the scales, then glue 'em on.
I probably won't be able to finish it till next friday though dang it.
Luckly we have belt sanders, drill presses & a lathe at work & I can use them on my time off.Pretty cool.
Pics when it's done.....

nice to have easy access to quality tools for sure. would love a belt sander, but not in the cards right now. looking forward to seeing some pics.

quick note for anyone without a vice: a handy pair of deck boards with just the right sized gap between then can be very useful,.

Well,I got up late today & farted around selling knives, answering emails & PMs,then packaging knives to send off to new homes, then running to the PO,so I didn't get to work on my LRK.
But Hanna is in remission!Yeahaw!

And this is all very much appreciated!

Ok,I finally got my 2nd one done.
I gotta warn you all though,I got carried away on this thing.:o

I opted for orange liners under the Shade Tree J-Glow Burlap.
I also tried a mustard patina, but it came out really splotchy with parts still looking like bare metal,so I blued the whole thing.

Then I really got a wild hair up my..... & decided to try some orange tritium vials in the pin.

I had to drill a hole in the pin stock & luckly we have a lathe at work & I was able to get the hole pretty much centered with the lathe, but the smallest bit I had was still quite a bit bigger than the trit tubes,so it was hard to get the tubes centered without pushing them too far into the pin while all gooped up with epoxy & the one on the left isn't centered.:(
I have some ideas rattling around in my gourd for my next attempt with trit tubes don't worry.....;)
I still have 2 blue & 2 red.

Then I got another hair & decided to try some freehand jimping & as you can see...I failed at that,(I need to figure out a jig for nice evenly spaced groves)so I ground that mess down & made a nice thumb ramp, but almost ground into the K...I got lucky there.
It looks funny,but feels good.:p
Sorry for the resemblance to the Funky EDC Chris(KFU)but you should have seen the mess I made of the jimping.:barf:

I gotta say I am pleased with the thumb ramp,it is located just right & fits my thumb perfect.

Check out the scales in the scales, looks reptilian eh.(or fishy?)

I also went thin on the scales.

Here you can see the glow powder in the scales illuminated & the trit in the pin glowing a bit.
It is much brighter in a darker setting than my dinning room/kitchen with background lighting on,but trying to get a pic in the dark just yielded fuzzy pics.:(

Here you can see how I reprofiled the point.

Wow! That is something. You got a real eye for neat ideas. I would have never thought of any of that.

I think it looks awesome!

Cool! I like the idea of the tritium in the pin - well done!

I have to use a tripod to get decent pictures of anything glowing - I took these when trying to show Dahlken's glowing eye beads -

Thanks gents.
Now what to do for the next one.......hmmmm,the wheels are turnin'.

Maybe I should let John do the thumb notches.

Ya'll remember my cord wrapped LRK+?

Well.......
I decided I didn't like the epoxied wrap so I put some natural micarta with black liners & brown micarta pins on it.
I thought I had the grain of the pins aligned with the scales, but I guess I was seeing saw marks through the epoxy & they are off.
No biggie,it'll still cut don't worry.:)
