ok. here we go. so, i did another WIP knife yesterday. i have the bug. so, worked on the LRK+ when i got home from work today.
i learned a bit from yesterday to today. yesterday, i was outside for 3+ hours. today, i worked that down to 1+ hours. i also skipped some steps today.
i don't want to post the other WIP thread because i feel weird linking to another maker's thread. if you want to see what i am talking about, you can just go to my profile and see my recent history (i'm guessing). i only mention it because, for me, it was part of this process.
rather than comment on each pic, i'm just going to go through my process and then just post a mess of pics. and be forewarned....there are a bunch.
i knew right away that i wanted a slim handle on this knife. so, i actually went back to the band saw and cut the scales right in half on each side. i really wish i thought of this yesterday. i started with a 40-grit grinding disc (set into my drill press). i then moved it to the bench vice and hit it with files. this took up the majority of my time. it is tough to get the symmetry just right.
then, i just finished with 400 and 800-grit sandpaper. i already had the right shape with the files. so, i did the handle shoe-polish style and this helped contour the edges nicely.
then, i drank a beer.
i still need to properly finish the knife. it still has epoxy on the blade and just a bit on the butt and finger groove. but overall, i am pleased with it. feels great in the hand. and the KOA really has a nice grain. this really might be my new favorite knife.
ok, ok....on to the pics!
