Disaster!
103_9837.jpg

Thsi turned up today, it didn't happen while drilling, must have come undone along a "fault line" (>?) while sanding, think it could be okay, going to go through with it anyway and see what i ca learn, stull have some other blocks if it doesn't work.

FYI: for anyone thinking about doing serious shaping before putting the pins in, I think I'd advise against it. It's been fun, works, but I keep having to think a few steps ahead to make sure it all works out when put together/gets sanded smooth (I've already had a few scares with the bade side scales being shaped to low down exposing the but of the tang, but managed to work them out so far). Next time I think I'l just cut a rough shape and attach it before any real sanding. I really only wen this way because the pins were behind the knife and wood and I just couldn't wait to get started :p - just one dullards opinion during his first effort :D

Bummers! Is that wood stabilized?

best

Stabilized wood will crack. I always lay the blade on the wood, drill one hole, put in a pin, drill the other hole, put in the pin, then trace around the handle. Repeat for the other side, then remove the handles and cut around the tracing. Then I pin the two slabs together and shape the front of the handles so they match. Then I glue them in place. After the glue has dried I sand the handles to the blade size.

Damn dude in sorry to see that, though it's not that bad! Could you use the old wood dust and epoxy method? I'm goin to have to be very careful when I get to work, I feel like this would be something that would happen to me...

Thanks for the advice JK!

Here is an important tip, be sure your drill bit is sharp and the tip of your pins are beveled. With a dull bit you tend to "force' the hole.

Thank you, method modified, :p

I think, think, it'll be okay, might try some epoxy or even filler, but it still seems strong,, it's the inside f the scale anyhow so I should get plenty of epoxy when I glue it on, might just work as one of those holes mykel m was telling us to make before we attach them, who knows

thanks again

Sorry to see that Peter, hope you can still use it.
Does it smell like some type of resin when you sand it or does it just smell like wood?(easy way to tell if it's stabilized)

Thanks, me to

it doesn't smell like any wood I've anded before now you come to mention it,

Got impatient again waiting for the pins, also decided I'd play with the (possibly) doomed scale with the small crack, see what i could learn from it, if it broke, the I was going to have to replace it anyway.

For the first tie I'm starting to thin this actually won't turn out quite so bad (knock on wood)

Nice! I ruined 2 bits, broke 2 sets of scales, and spent more $ at the hardware store than the knife costs. I don't want to say I've failed yet, but I'm teetering on the edge. Oh, and I just got the knife today... If this keeps up I'm going to have to put my tail between my legs and run from my own thread and have a maker do it for me :(

Nah, don't do that, even crappy scales you make yourself will be something to look at and smile, and you can always get another one to have done professionally :D although i have looked at mykel m's paracord thread more then once...dang wood!

Whats going on? bad wood, bad rill bits? I can safely say I've made enough mistakes at this point and earned enough to reach the level of mighty suckdom (or sucketh hardeth to some) I figure it'd help us both out to talk it through.

Thanks for the encouragement Ky! I'm gonna give it another go and if all else fails it may new to get some professional pants put on. Otherwise I will put it in a drawer and always be too annoyed to use it. Apparently getting a knife scaled and looking professional isn't as easy as it looks...:o

my LRK+ should arrive today. got my liners in yesterday. getting my epoxy in soon. aaand....just found a good deal on an old band saw. awww yeahhh. getting excited to make a mess! :D

and pmbspyder....keep hope alive!

Can't wait to see the "mess", band saw, you are going all out then :p

Starting to shape up, still a few mistakes and had a few "this isn't going to work moments, but were replaced with "it just might moments" again so i'm all good,

think I'm going to switch to a higher grade sand paper again soon

that's starting to take shape KYe. looking pretty good. you might want to do the final shaping after it is glued together. i think it's easier that way. just a thought.

I do all shaping (except for the front of the scales) after they are glued on. I still have not decided what scales to put on the Tanto L.R.K.+.
