Morning all, looks a good time last night ("night" being a relative term to worldwood, who never sleeps or rests and apparently exists only on good karma and excellent home cooking ;)).

Glad to see NYOutdoors and the machete saga are working themselves out, thanks for that raindog.

While that knife looks cool, i never cared for damascus looks. The handle does look superb though. but Id buy a motorcycle for 8000. I wouldnt be allowed to drive it but hey, it would look good sittin in a driveway. And thats not a knife thats getting used im sure, its looking good sitting in a display most likely. Id rather have a motorcycle on display HAHA

Yeah, I know, 8,000 for a knife! That's why I didn't buy it. :)

And the winner of the small handmade fixed blade I posted up earlier is: NikkiR!

She guessed exactly the correct price (8,000), so I felt no need to continue until the original deadline.

In case you missed it, here is the fixed blade she won:

And here is the custom ZT that sold for 8,000:

Awesome sauce!!! Thank you so much! This will be my first handmade blade, and I will cherish is very much, and show it a lot of love!

Ok, I just got to work, and I sifted through the wake-up time guesses. Before I announce the winner, I'd like to say that this was a game for me as much as it was for y'all. I really didn't know when I was going to wake up; I might wake up before the alarm, or I might semi-unconsciously hit the snooze a few times.

Today's time was 7:15. I think ALLHSS had the closest guess.

Congratulations! Send me an email with your info, and I'll try to send it out next week :)

Holy crap! This was my first participation and my first win of anything! I'm really happy to be a part of this. I know what I want to pay forward with, but I'm still thinking of a game... I'll email you my stuff.

Yeah, you're not going to get very good quality from crappy big-box store machetes. I have the same Harbor Freight machete. I bought it for the sheath, really. But you can get very good quality steel, and fit/finish from just about any reputable machete manufacturer. I have Cold Steel, Condor, Ontario, and Tramontina, and would recommend any variety from these manufacturers highly. My personal favorites are the Ontario 12" Cutlass (1095 steel), Condor Golok (1075 I believe), and Tramontina Bolo (1070). The style/shape of the machete will be dependent on your intended uses. I love the Ontario for a backpacking machete. The Golok is just too durn heavy to justify humping it very far, but it's a helluva chopper. The Tram is a great beater, the soft steel means you can bring the edge back from certain doom. And if you destroy it (unlikely), you're only out a few bucks.
What would you recommend specifically for wood processing, no need to be light weight as I dont plan to carry it around. By wood processing I mean everything from trimming the offshoots off trees, removing dead over-hang, chopping up everything from tender wood to logs and possible splitting logs. On and cheap.

Becker BK9. Do it. Seriously.

Kershaw camp 10 or 14. Can be had for under $45. Becker bk9 is also great but around $75. And of course a fiskars hatchet can be had for $30 or less and are great

Are any of you guys adventurous home cooks? I've got something to post up in a bit as I'm on tapatalk right now and can't put up pictures.

Edit:
This is a Dexter-Russell, made in SouthBridge, MA, US of A it has a high carbon stainless blade. Dexter is fairly well known for their huge meat cleavers that chop through bone.

***But note that this guy is done in a Chinese chef knife pattern, it actually has a fine edge for slicing and can't chop through heavy bone. It will make short work in processing a whole chicken though. The back spine is for whacking and tenderizing, you can use the flat portion for flattening out pork chops or for smashing garlic, does a wonderful job at this. I hacked at a frozen pork butt once and I dented the edge a bit. So as soon as I re-profile it, its going to be available for grabs. *That's a steak knife above it btw for size comparison purposes.

I thought I was adventurous... Till I saw what you meant by adventurous. That's a big knife.

That Dexter-Russel is nice! Love me some cleavers, that's for sure. I'm not calling dibs, but anyone who enjoys cooking and doesn't have one should grab that.

Should of mentioned I already have a X11! I'd love a bk9 but a) if I'm spending that much on a knife it better be able to fold or atleast fit concealed in my pocket and serve well for every day use and b) I kinda specifically need a machete, the main use will be wood processing but it also needs to be able to get threw thick (and thorny) weeds/overgrowth and I'm not sure I want my hand swinging that close to raspberry / briars.

I've had a BK7 for about a year now, it is a beast of a knife. Not quite a BK9, but it is just right for me. Here's a pic:

if you want to conceal a bk9 you need to get some 511s

Ok guys, I have a used Mora Bushcraft up for grabs. It's used, comes with the sheath. Needs some edge work, it was convexed...decided I hate convex edges....so I tried to put a new edge on it...fail. Anywhoo....I wan't this to go to someone who needs a fixed blade. I don't want it sitting in a dark corner somewhere...No one puts Mora in a corner. Here is the catch. You have to tell me what color my eyes are. Boom.
