Here are the plans for the project. Please don't make fun of my drafting skills (or lack there of!).

Almost 4 inches overall (3.900)
0.900 Outer Diameter.
Cap has striking surface and a 0.187 x 2.000 Ferro rod set inside
Holds 15 matches dipped in paraffin or more.
Two O-Rings to make it water proof

Basically it is a design stealer from K&M Match Case. I have been talking to Keith about these - he is okay with my project. I have no intention to sell these in mass. Maybe one or two - mostly these are intended to be gifts.

Thoughts?

1) The ferro Rod on the inside is simply to make an easier package. It is small and simply allows for a back up fire starting system.

2) The striking surface will be used on the inside of the cap - and the knurling will be the right depth to use as a striker as well. My goal will have these hard anno'd.

Ok. I like it a lot. I have on of those orange ones everyone seems to have and like the idea of a tough looking metal one with the features you have designed. You know you're going to get slammed for orders when you post the final pics, don't you?

(I'd take 4)

The reality is that you could simply modify a K&M Matchcase. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I may make a couple for sale - but I am not going to break in on Keith's business - he is too nice of a guy. But if I made add a stiker to the tail end of it - and then I would have something a little original. Kind of a hybrid from the Aurora and the K &M.

Update:

After about two hours today I had this:

MatchCase001.jpg

I started with a inch bar of aluminum stock and turned it down to .910.

I then knurled that. I purposefully crosshatched the knuling a little so it would serve as a match striker. It isn't as pretty as the K&M (see below) but works for my purpose.

I then started on the cap. That is the thing that takes so stinkin' long.

Shown here with only one O-ring - you will be able to also use the bottom of the cap as a striker.

Tomorrow I will turn this down a little bit - and then set the compass shown inside. This may be tricky - but I am learning a ton.

I will also drill the cap out for the smaller Ferrocerium rod tomorrow.

Then comes the part for me that is new - boring the inside of the match case out.

I will bore out the inside tomorrow - turn down a portion at the base for a lanyard to fit through - and then I will part it off - I could potentially be done with my prototype tomorrow. I may even set a striker for the ferro rod in the bottom - like the Aurora has.

Here is a pic of what I have so far next to a K & M matchcase for reference.

Still, its good work. You've got skills!

IMO a great improvement would be to make the lid screw on.

I have a couple of the K&M matchboxes and to be honest I like the simple plastic screw tops better. No strings and the lid is more secure:thumbup:

I just ordered 2 from K&M, a brass and a plain aluminum.
Looks like first rate kit to me, if the top fits as snug as they say,
I'd prefer it to be friction fit.

Liam,

The case is pretty much a work of art from K&M. Very simple - and the top fits JUST right - not to tight - not too loose. Works perfectly.

Hollow,

You may think you prefer it - but you would have to have some FAT threads to make it from aluminum and be strong and not bind - that would add to the weight - like double the current case.

Rest,

Here is the update after four more hours today (this was my first time boring):

I have to drill three more holes and it is done. I will drill two for the end fob hole and one more for the Ferrocerium rod in the cap.

The body is pretty much how I want it - the cap was perfect until I decided to trim some material off and the jaws slipped. DAMN! You can see the jaw marks if you look close - I was able to clean a lot of the mess up.

Thoughts?

TF,

That is looking really cool! I noticed that the cap appears to be a solid plug of aluminum, which probably weighs quite a bit. IIRC, you will be mounting a button compass in this so that might eliminate some of the metal, but what if you hollowed the lid out entirely and made a second compartment? Maybe the button compass could be mounted on the lit to that compartment. It may not be as waterproof, but the space wouldn't go to waste and you might be able to put a spool of dental floss, some PCBs, or steel wool in there.
