The Mighty Pequena

Thanks to some kind advice from a fellow member I have found someone in the US who has agreed to sell to me. Hopefully this will proceed without hitch. Unfortunately that LARGE online auction house will not allow me to even search for what the UK and Ireland have decided is a weapon!

Hope you get to try one of these great little knives

Well.....my little Pequena arrived today. Sharp out of the box and I just love the back spring! The handle had that 'just sanded' look to it....so a little application of Wood Balsam brought out the beautiful wood colour. I am very pleased with it and many thanks to Gevonovich for pointing me in the right direction:thumbup:

I now wish that Opinel would do something similar!

Fantastic news!! Jack and Thom have really started something. I wonder if its true they are discontinuing production of these beauties.

Enjoy the last of the Mohicans:D

I just ordered one today. I'm glad I didn't put it off any longer. I wonder if it's just the pequena that's being discontinued, or all sizes.

Hope you'll be pleased with it r8shell. I recently tracked down a (somewhat obscure) UK dealer that now stocks the knives, and they have all 3 models listed, so I really don't know

Been meaning to chime in here and give thanks to Jack and the rest for spurring me to pick up one of these awhile back. I'd been eyeballing them forever and the discontinuation scare pushed me over the edge to pull the trigger on one. I went with the Mediana around 4" closed, perfect for my preferences.

Wood on mine came bone dry and about 20 shades lighter than in the pics, took a mineral oil bath to darken it up and get a nice sheen going.
Pivot almost instantly seized up with grit, took a toothbrush and some soap to it under a scalding hot faucet plus some liberal oil flushings and working the blade open and closed to get the action smooth. Has a HUGE snap and is rock solid tight in the open.
Blade centering is no bueno, rubs the liner. For the price and the hard working nature of the knife, doesn't bother me.
Edge came okay, but I thinned it out and it takes a fine toothy edge and is quite the slicing machine now.

So with a little extra effort this knife transformed into one of my most pocketed pieces. Everything about it screams to use it. And as noted by Jack the blade shape lends itself especially well in the kitchen. The handle seemed a bit blocky in pictures, but once in hand it's incredibly ergonomic and filling. No sharp corners anywhere on the knife.

As for the lack of a kick, I'd been taking care to guide the blade closed and not to let the blade snap shut. However, it got away from me when closing it after putting a fresh edge on it and mangled about 1/8" of the edge. Wedging a stack of rubber band slices in there seems to have done the trick for cushioning the edge from any further mishaps.

For ~$20 these seem to be one of the best deals out there and complement other hardworking bargain knives like the Sodbuster, Douk-Douk, Opinel, Svord etc. They also satisfy the regional niche of having a Spanish made navaja-esque folder in the line-up. Good stuff, thanks Jack and everyone else who helped turn me on to this one!

Thanks a lot for the pics and write-up sir, glad it's working out for you :)

Andi, just get one :p You will be in love with it. It's nice to see these catching on and being so appreciated. I really hope that they are not destined for extinction as well. I grabbed a small one to compliment my grande, and feel these will last through a lifetime (of my use) anyways...I also have found the box that mine came in to be very handy for carrying batteries around. Very durable and securely latches shut.

This talk of the knife being discontinued is horrible. Been brooding about getting one in the small size, pref. stainless if it exists...
Was in touch with some dealer in Spain but he wanted 25€ in postal charges for ONE knife from one EU country to another! Uh uh.

I am tickled pink with this little fella' ! :D

quite a difference in size from the grande that I got earlier  :)

Yay!!! :)

I ran out of small kitchen knives earlier, had to run and get the Pequena! :D

Mine arrived yesterday!

Kind of odd having to get it from the USA when I live in the EU, but still worked out cheaper! Those Spanish postal costs are appalling.....

It arrived in a box stating that it was stainless, but the blade is clearly marked carbon and behaves accordingly. Blade not centre but not rubbing either, quite a strong pull on this one could almost do with a nick...great snap and very nice finish. It looked a bit dry and pale but a couple of coats of Teak oil really brought out the Bubinga's colour, nice reds. No blade play and felt smooth in the hand, an excellent handle shape even in the smallest pattern. The leaf blade is typical of many European knives and offers a lot of cutting sense, no wonder Spyderco opted for leaf blades...Arrived dull though and not well bevelled, unlike say Opinels, but it's taken shape and sharpness very nicely indeed.

As Jack says, it's an honest knife with very useful potential and decent character, certainly worth getting. Inexpensive, authentic and a serious carry. I'm really pleased with it.

Glad to hear that you got one Will! My Pequeña and Grande are kitchen favorites all of sudden. The Pequeña is great as a paring knife and peeler. The handles offer a very secure comfortable grip for me too.

Thanks, I'm about to test it out on some veggies right now, it blackened after slicing the breakfast oranges...Seems like a top tot!

The grip is safe and comfortable, very typical of Euro working knives.

Regards, Will
