Of the knives I own and have owned which there are many and still do the Buck 403 is and has been for a long while the most general purpose do all knife. Why in the world they stopped making them is beyond me.
It does woods and camp duty as well as food prep EDC and anything in between. I love love love bucks 420hc as well.
Never had a hot spot carving, it's ergonomic and fits my hand as though it was designed for it. I've used it hard I guess mainly because I wanted to know, battoned through hickory and oak and never had a chipped or rolled edge and it holds that edge just fine.
I bought it on a late night search on ebay liked the way it looked and never ever figured it would be "THE KNIFE"
They are becoming scarce and though I can't recommend you spend the money mostly because your not me and may not like it. For me it's the everything knife that suits my needs

The best knives for doing everything, have to have handles that are comfortable....a knife that begs to be grabbed. Used. A knife that wants to be held.

Funny you mentioned cherry. Last year a guy at work gave me a scrap piece to put on something for him....
It was from another coworker/buddy....his parents tree. I once picked cherries off that tree, and made the best Kriek beer ever..... anyhow that piece of scrap changed how I think about cherry/wood.

It's one of the hardest woods I ever used.
Burns every single cut, but learned cherry Can be durable.

Svord maybe. For kitchen duty and cutting up stuff. Something with a blade about 4.5 to 6 inches.or a a Hudson Bay knife, like this Caleb Cox.
