The Mountian Bike Thread..

After lots of research and almost buying a Brooks Pro at my local shop, I decided on the Super Special Selle Italia "TAINT Relief Special" AKA...Max Flite Gel Flow.

Should be here in a week.

Ive never ridden a bike with clip less pedals,
There is a bike Im looking at checking out,
it has clip-less pedals on it.
Can I test ride that thing with regular shoes
or do I need to have the guy swap pedals or something.
(another 12 yr old bike,GT XCR I-Drive if you have comments,Id appreciate it)

You need to swap pedals if you want to really give a decent test.

I road a GT rigid set up bike for years and my brother road a Pantera. Great bikes IMO. They take a ton of abuse in the woods. My only advice is to try to figure out when GT flopped and avoid bikes after that date. In 2002 I think I would have bought a GT instead of my GF if GT was still the original company. So I think the flop was earlier that 02.

Thanks for the advice on the gt
the guy sent me some pictures of it

1000 miles long race along the northern border of Czechoslovakia, from East Slovakia to West Bohemia. The track has been planed to avoid civilization as much as possible and to be as difficult as possible. The bikers had to have all the needed equipment with them, no external support was provided along the course.
The rest of the Czech comments is not important, I just think you might enjoy watching this...

The winner did it in 8 days and 8 hours. There were also bikers who planned to make it in 11 days and it took them 21...

Cell shot of the new seat today.

Its not a miracle but its a lot better in a lot of ways. Satisfied.

That looks nice, what kind of seat is it?

I just wanted to mention that I see in the picture your seat has a pronounced downward tilt to it. While it is enticing to do that because of the perceived protection for your nuts and such, eventually you will feel like you are getting pushed forward onto your handle bars. It will become uncomfortable and will cause fatigue in your wrists/arms/shoulders. You might want to try making it more level. Of course since it's new, you'll probably end up making multiple adjustments (height, fore and aft, and tilt) until you find the optimal position.

Thanks guys. It is angled slightly down. The picture is very distorted though, its not as bad as it seems. Its the Selle Italia Max Flite.

I was riding with my old seat before I got the new yesterday. I was wearing three layers of shorts with my old seat to compensate, it was getting that bad on long seated rides. I think when I go and ride with one pair like I normally would have I will be able to angle the seat back up without all the extra layers getting in the way.

One thing about this seat that is really standout to me is the shape of it. I feel like I can pedal much stronger now, the seat is shaped better to the muscles on the inside of my legs. I don't feel like I am crushing the sides of my seat anymore. It is wider at the rear though. Its a good design. The cutout made a lot of difference too.

Okay, enough saddle talk from me.

And thanks again for all the fitting info and saddle options. I was clueless going into this one.

I have the same seat. One if the best anti fatigue and Ass ache prevention investments. They are high. But not for what they give back

I watched a short video about fore and aft adjustment. It said knee above the pedal at 3 and 9. So I adjusted for that. I then used a level on flat ground for the angle.

I agree J. The only discomfort I got riding at any distance was from my seat. I can handle all the burning legs in the world. I actually like it. But all that discomfort from my old saddle was just getting out of hand.

Thanks guys for the help.

Thanks squish.

Quick question to the guys in the know. Do I want the seat perfectly level to the ground even if there is a drop from saddle to handle bars?

The videos I was finding were very general.

Thanks

Another cell pic with a cheap cell app sepia effect :-p

Didn't have time so went for a mix of cornfields and road.

It is a major improvement over my old saddle.

Leveling the seat did not make it at all uncomfortable either.
