here is a closer leaf pic. it isnt the exact same sub-species, but I dont think we are being that specific.
In this pic you can see the flowers around the base.
 
I think I got it now. Your first pic had me confused cause of the coloration. Once you put the size down that helped as well.

If I'm right, the root can also be used to flavor foods.
 
There is also a resteraunt in Hyde Park, OH that shares a name with this plant (not that that is all that helpful)
 
I think the plant is Hexastylis, not sure of the species. Maybe arifolia?

here's an easy one... this one has roots which can be brewed for tea..the aboriginal peoples often used the tea frm this plant as an elixer to help relieve the effects of exposure to smoke

okay, I think this should be a little easier than wild ginger,

Used to boost the immune system, grows wild in the great plains areas, was used by commanche and cheyenne. can get a few feet tall. Has alot of medicinal uses.
