The "Name that Plant" Game

Scarlet Pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis)? Had to look up the latin on that one.
(Actually I used Anagallis arvensis as my email address at one time.)

Ding, ding. Very good QB. I thought that would be tougher. You're up QB!

As to the "but it is a good thing to keep in mind", it refers to the fact, things aren't always as they seem. For you youngun's, The Scarlet Pimpernel (the original, and best - 1934) was a movie about an English nobleman who posed as a buffoon, so as to allay suspicions that he was the Scarlet Pimpernel - saviour of countless French nobility, who were threatened to meet Madam Guillotine, during the French Revolution.

A fictional account AFAIK.

Ok, seeing as these are getting tougher, I am adding a twist, the only clue on this one comes from mistwalker's "Finding some Fatwood" thread linked below (see post #3, the dead tree below the comment, "Even though it looks rotten..."). He didn't mention what species of tree it is he is getting the fatwood from, but the branch rings are actually pretty distinctive for this species. These trees grows pretty much throughout Appalachia, and there are only some many species of pine... Correct answer will unleash a video!

Good luck!

theonew ~ Your close in that they are both gymnosperms, but it is a species of pine. Keep in mind, what you are looking at in mistwalker's pics is dead. But that is what you need to identify in the end for it to be of use to you for fire.

Nope on the spruce and loblolly. Good guess on the loblolly as I believe taeda is latin for torch, but that is not it.

Negative. Nice guess on the table mountain pine though. Slash pine is too far south. Only a few choices left...

Gymnosperms??? Sounds like something found in the washroom of a fitness club!!!

Wasn't there a 'no professionals' rule?  You guys, know of course, that QB is a forester or something like that? RINGER!!! RINGER!!!!

Anyway, you got me, QB. :D

Jk, of course, QB, this is all about learning.

Doc's got the next one for rightfully calling me out! :D

I could make a few guesses but the cool thing is that I know what a gymnosperm is now, "naked seeds"

I think it bugged you I got Scarlet Pimpernel. ;) ;)

All joking aside, based on the years we have been on this board, I humbly bow down to Doc when it comes to plants.

Hey theo, Riley and BF, see what he did there? They don't even grow up here!!!!! Infraction! Infraction!

JK bro. I have to go out so maybe Theo or BF (they both have vertical trees ) can post next.

BTW, GS, I'm not entering the contest for one of your knives. A very generous offer, to be sure, but I'm just playing for the fun and practice.

Catch you later, (hope to see several more pages by the time I get back )

I think it bugged you I got Scarlet Pimpernel. ;) ;) No, not at all - what did bug me is you got it before I could post my picture of Leslie Howard and Merle Oberon that I had downloaded as a clue.:(

-----sucking up now, are you? :D

I'm not sure about that, and it's not a contest anyway. I forgot about the forester thing until I looked at your new forum name.

Anyway, cheers,

Someday, QB, you and me around a fire, both hands full of beer!
