Hazy today, but McDill Point is known for its views free of the evidence of civilization. Most other viewpoints, you can see where a state highway cuts through, and local industry off in the distance.

Yesterday I found what look like strips of second layer cedar(?), that maybe some animal had been building a nest with...or something. I don't know where they came from, just a crack in the rock littered with strips of bone dry tinder. I'd already rolled up a handful before deciding to take a pic.
Talk about a lucky find if you were needing fire, though.

I put a track on par with my goofy commentary in place of the audio, since trying to edit the first part out wasn't working. "Oh, where did it come from? Maybe it blew off the trees?!?"
Now the edit worked, and the audio hasn't changed, but it'll have music instead of me jabbering before it's all over with...

Great looking views Codger. I was on the Buffalo a couple of months back and it is a very beautiful scenic place. Me and a couple of buddies found a nice waterfall back in an alcove. It was 2 tiered so we climbed up to the top tier and stood in the waterfall. Amazingly cold water, especially during the heat of summer. Was definitely a great place to rest and cool off. Glad to see someone on the forums who lives fairly close by. Thanks for the pics!

I've only been on this river about six times, all this year, so I haven't learned much about it yet. My "home river" is the Buffalo River in Arkansas and I have paddled it from it's mean beginnings to it's confluence with the White River. So far I've only made one overnighter on the river here, but I plan to do more soon. My main canoing partner is Jake as seen in my avitar. He is good company but isn't much help loading, unloading and paddling my 16' canoe. I'd enjoy some human company sometime if you are up this way. Flatwoods is the general area, South of Linden.

If you want, you can PM me your addy so I can get a better idea of the logistics. I am in Clifton and Waynesboro on occasion running service calls. We can definitely get together sometime. I love to canoe and just generally be a river rat.

Clifton is close, just to the South of me on 69. Email me direct. This is the outfitter I use as a shuttle service. Great family owned business and very accomodating. They are beginning to close down for the season, but have agreed to shuttle me whenever and wherever I ask with a bit of prior notice. I asked about all winter.

Cloudy today, and a little sprinkling rain.

From the lower portion of the Nubbin Creek Trail, the only trail section at Cheaha I had not done yet this year. Where will I go now:confused:

In September me and my buddy went looking for fossils again in one of the clay pits we visit (all by ourselves, good thing). We worked all day, and then we noticed we uncovered too much of the fossiliferous layer to bring home. Se we went back last week to go collect the rest. The clay is now drying so I don't have any results yet (probably only next year) but I had a little luck and was able to find some shark teeth in the side of the exposed layer.

The quarry wall that contains the fossiliferous layer. It's situated above the black layer containing woodfragments from the Early-Cretaceous.

Same wall, but more contrast. What some better weather does with clays and silts... (pic taken in april)

I don't think a mushroom can scream "Don't eat or touch me" any harder than this one...

It was a great day! Too bad I'll only know what the result was of this effort in a couple of months, maybe years. It's all drying in 30-40kg bags at the moment. This saturday I'm out fossil hunting again, this time in a chalk quarry. I hope I'll find some good stuff.
