The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

Short family vacation this week. We stuck to touristy stuff, but got to play around near Gatlinburg at a couple of places with that are popular picnic spots with lots of rocks and flowing water, and we went to DuPont State Park in North Carolina, which has several nice waterfalls within a little over a mile of each other. I didn't try to do any real hiking, as my back was giving me lots of problems, but had a great time hanging out with my parents. We did a lot of eating, some sightseeing, shopping, playing cards at night, and putt-putt golf:)
These first three waterfalls are from DuPont State Park. Some scenes from Last of the Mohicans and The Hunger Games were filmed here...

Triple Falls:
First two are from the middle. I had a lot of fun going up and down the falls, and videoed going from top to bottom so my mother could see what it was like up close.

That's my dad down there on the left.

This was from the top section:

Cataract Falls:
dscn3222z.jpg

This is just .1 mile off a 2 mile trail that goes from the Sugarland visitor center into Gatlinburg, and I had never gone and looked at it. Given the name, I was expecting something a bit more dramatic:D

Great shots, Owen! Your water-flowing shots are coming out well, I really like the 2nd and 3rd from last

What? What about the last one?!?
That's Cataract Falls, you know!

Thanks! I may be overplaying the Aperture Priority thing, but it's a learning process. The falls are all pretty much true to life, but some of my closer shots looked like wrinkled white sheets channeled through glowing rocks when I let jacking up the f-stop get out of hand. It was all very heavenly, but...delete, delete, delete:(

Heheh :)

I admit I was rather terrified of the awesome power displayed in the mere pic of the epic Cataract Falls... As with any phenomenon beyond the processing capacity of the human brain, my mushy matter simply cleared itself of all consideration and recollection of the event... safer that way. In truth, I am dumbfounded as to how you are alive, much less typing coherently on an internet forum, after experiencing in person an event of such magnitude....

You know someone got a chuckle out of establishing that lil bait and switch :D

Those shots are great, you really get a sense of motion in the still picture. Iʻm envious, one of these days Iʻm going to upgrade my camera...

Beautiful pics as always!

You know someone got a chuckle out of establishing that lil bait and switch :D
I appreciate your appreciation of the sitiation;)
It was distressing...realizing I'd hiked a couple of hundred yards for that pic, and then having to hike all the way back.

I need to pick up a larger pack before then, but if I am able to save up enough vacation time, I'm game. I have plans to do the Canyon of the Tuolumne with a colleague sometime in early summer or late spring to catch the water wheels in action, but after that I should be free. I know you like to do high country on your long trips, so I'm thinking you're aiming for later in the summer?

Yes, probably in the late July to mid August range, depending on snowpack this year.

Someone is trying to talk me into repeating this year's trip, and I am considering it. It was a great trip, so I wouldn't mind doing it again.

My last couple of outdoor adventures, I took this little thing. I made it from 154CM, and G10. Knife and sheath together weigh 2.6 oz., and that is the same as my Buck Vantage Small. Good for backpacking.

Here is how it looked when I first started using it:

After using it a few times, I decided to contour the scales, and make the handle more comfortable:

It was fun to make it, and since then, I have made several more minimalist knives, with backpacking in mind.

Very Nice! I'm very much interested in your minimal backpacking-geared knives. Anywhere I can check out what you've been making? I just picked up a fixed Kershaw Skyline with orange G10 handle. Going to have some kydex made for and see how well it'll serve as a backpacking knife.

Here are some pictures from a 3 day trip I took earlier this year in Glacier N.P.

Just out of the parking lot.

Well, the ones you put here are enough to make me salivate. Some parts of my "4 year plan" change, but Glacier being near the top of the list doesn't.
Thanks!

Here are some more from last week, from a few places around GSMNP and DuPont State Park:

This next two are right outside Gatlinburg, coming in from the epic Cataract Falls. That splotch of yellow in the upper left is a road sign.

Similar spot, further along:

I think these are from somewhere below the Chimney Tops, but can't remember the name of the place.

edit: that one loads outrageously big for some reason:confused:
Believe I may have uploaded a couple of these pics from High Falls and Triple Falls twice by accident:

Above Hooker Falls, that I posted pics of before. This was a nice spot. My dad stopped here to wash his shoes-these trails are also used by people on horseback:)

Back in TN, these are the Chimney Tops.

The Happy Hiker has been out of business for a couple of years, and there were problems with the building, but Barrett maintains a Facebook page with pics(awesome pics, check it out!), news, local events, and weather updates.
I'm always hoping for HH to reopen, but doubt it will happen. NOC(Nantahala Outdoor Center) has a location in Gatlinburg, now, which is a lot bigger, but not the same as a small shop, which I much prefer. I did love that store...

My parents love the Riverhouse, and we've been going there since the 80s:

Heading home. I think we all would have enjoyed staying a couple more days. It's a beautiful part of the country.

Thank you, Mano.

I have only read good things about the Skyline, and thought of getting one myself. But I already have too many knives.

As far as knives I have made in the past, I have either sold them or given them all away.

Currently I have seven knives in the making, and I am waiting for them to come back from heat treat.

Here are recent pictures:

Here are older pictures, including some non-knife pictures. Maybe someday I will learn to create albums:

Owen, nice additions! I really like that first shot, with the color in the foreground fading to gray in the background. Good times with your parents =

Redsquid, looking good, your sheepsfoot/wharnecliffe blades are particularly appealing to me. I'll have to keep an eye out for any you share in the makers section. As for the skyline, I only discovered the FB version through Galeocerdoshark and an incredible black friday deal he found. For the money, I had to try one out  2.8oz for knife alone (vs. 6oz for my Fallkniven F1). We'll see.

I like your cat in the box pics :D
