The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

Great pics, John! I guess we just think we know about elevation change around here!

I've been going through mine from a quick overnight(quick, ha-I drove about 8 hours total to do 8 miles of hiking:rolleyes:), and may post a separate thread again. If not this evening, then tomorrow.
tease...if you walked around the wrong side of my lopsided tent last night you'd have about 120ft to go before you hit anything else.

8 hrs drive, wow! i will no longer complain when i only have to drive 1.5 hrs tops to get to some awesome spots to hike.

That'll do it, or so I keep hearing from friends and colleagues who are or will be parents of young children. It sounds like the trick is making time to get out on mini-trips; outings don't need to be strenuous epic adventures. You have a few national forests and lakes near you - just do some low-impact visits. it's amazing what a simple relaxing stroll or picnic can do for the mind and body. While there may be benefits to staying out and out of touch for at least 3 days, there's literature out there suggesting benefits of even short walks in the community park (one quick and dirty ref, and another, just to illustrate).

Welcome! :)

Thanks. Helpful links.

That's great if everything you want to see is within 1.5 hours.
Next week I'll be meeting up with a friend who moved to New Orleans, and hiking Louisiana's 32 mile Wild Azalea Trail:)

Well, as I said here I was asked to continue the search for the elusive skull of a fossil whale that was discovered two weeks ago. Most of the remains had been uncovered, but an important part for scientific research -the skull- remained absent.

The temporary outcrop consists mostl of Pliocene layers, dating back to approx. 3.5 million years old.

Here are some pics of the construction site:

A nice Bivalve (Arctica islandica) that was still intact:

Alas... no skull. We did move a lot of sand, so maybe it'll turn up next week. Let's hope so...

Ha! Mostly glauconitic sand and fragments from Pectinidae. The bivalve I dug out is Arctica islandica. I see a few Natica gastropods as well. Don't know anything about the smaller bivalves. My main point of interest is fossilized shark remains ;-).

JV3, nice work! Looks minimal and clean. What thickness? I'm ready to order a half tooth brush sheath! :p

Redsquid, you're welcome, I can email the full articles to folks if interested. Those were just quick and dirty pulls, I'm sure there are other or better publications out there.

Jerry - looks like it's progressing! And I'm with BTII :D

That fell through for my friend, so it isn't happening yet, after all. Big South Fork in TN and KY, and hopefully Mt. Rogers in VA, instead.
I suppose I can live with that :D

thanks! it's 0.080" thick...i can drill holes in the toothbrush sheath at no extra charge :p
by the way, i wrote a kydex bending tutorial (i'll re-post it here too once i figure out where it should be): http://jungletraining.com/forums/showthread.php?21502-how-to-make-kydex-sheaths.

Sweet, I'll be checking that out later tonight

I could live with any nice long solo hike right now. GFs mom in town, cramping my style :p

Very interesting stuff.

Here are a few pics from a chill outing this weekend with the GF and her mom to this Buddhist retreat in the Santa Cruz mountains. It's right next door to The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park which I've wanted to check out for a while now. Didn't get to do so on this trip, but I plan to go back soon. We did this small loop called the 8 Verses Trail where they have boards with verses on it to contemplate as you go proceed down the trail. Off that trail you can do a 3 mile or 6 mile loop within their property (we did the 3, quick and easy). You can also jump over the ridge into The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in a 13.5mi loop to Maple Falls and back. I would have liked to have done that, but it'll have to wait until the next time.

I didn't take many.

Murpharoo, nice!! Beautiful spots you had there! What tarp is that? I like how you can button it up around the poles.

Thanks HikingMano :)
It's a SpinnShelter by Gossamer Gear. Great shelter as it can be used open like a tarp or battened down with the doors closed in bad weather. We get a lot of wet weather in the UK!

I know you folks do! SpinnShelter, I knew it looked familiar, and the fabric looked like spinnaker. Looks like you possibly have a GG Pad there too, with a short Neoair?

I bet it was quite windy in your first two spots!

You have a keen eye my friend ;)

Haha, welcome, hope to see more pics from you! What floor are you using, btw?

In those pics it is a home made bucket Silnylon floor. Sometimes just a polycro sheet.
Might try a cuben floor but worried about puncture resistance and expense! My silnylon floor has been bomb proof :)
