The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

New Enlightened Equipment quilt arrived (30* with standard overstuff) :) Pardon pics as the quilt is straight out of the box and it didn't have time to loft.

Almost went with an orange exterior, but I wanted something more subdued, especially if I want to stealth camp at any time in the future. I'm very happy with the olive! If I pick up another down the line, I'll get it in the bright and cheery orange :D

Congratulations Mano!

I hope you keep us informed about how you like it, after some usage. I bought new sleeping gear a couple of seasons ago, and just couldn't bring myself to transition to a quilt. I bought a much lighter bag, but it's still a bag.

Owen, even knowing the specs, I was surprised at how light the revX is, it's awesome. I might upgrade to the Revelation if using this one works out well in use, or go with the revelation for a warmer quilt. The increased weather resistance sounds good, and it's a little lighter...

Thanks, redsquid! Will do  I sleep warm and don't like to feel constrained, so I'm hoping this works out nicely.

My God...this thread is torture. I really want to get out but having a wife that's pregnant with twins doesn't really allow me the time needed. I have been looking at these photos ALL DAY.

I work at a university and just found out that for spring break they are offering a trip to the Appalachian Trail for the entire week, it's open to faculty/staff members as well as students. I wish we could go...maybe next time.

That'll do it, or so I keep hearing from friends and colleagues who are or will be parents of young children. It sounds like the trick is making time to get out on mini-trips; outings don't need to be strenuous epic adventures. You have a few national forests and lakes near you - just do some low-impact visits. it's amazing what a simple relaxing stroll or picnic can do for the mind and body. While there may be benefits to staying out and out of touch for at least 3 days, there's literature out there suggesting benefits of even short walks in the community park (one quick and dirty ref, and another, just to illustrate).

Welcome! :)

Yeah, we try to go out when we can. We have a 19 month old little girl now. We tried her first "hike" the other weekend, down a creek trail here. She loved it but was a little too excited, kept wanting to wander off and into areas she shouldn't be. We also took a trip to the university's experimental forest uses for a short walk. There's several places around here, really been wanting to try the 4C trail in the Davy Crockett National Forest, wife just doesn't think she's really up to being out of the house for more than an hour or so at a time.

Soon enough, I hope, we will be able to do stuff again.

Changed my plans a little, having decided I didn't have time to squeeze in a side trip. Not heading out 'til in the morning, so uploaded some short videos from last week.
Anybody interested in Savage Gulf will see that the trails, even side trails, are exceptionally well marked.

"There is some water...and there is so more water... " :D Jumping around river rocks with the camera in-hand, eh? :D

Those bright blue blaze tags are nice and bright! Man, what a sweet place, very varied. And it looks like you had the joint to yourself, sweeet. When you were in the cave, I kept waiting for a glimpse of the Descent-esque cave dwelling monsters in the periphery of the light :D Awesome videos, thank you very much for taking us along! Beautiful place, scenic, and oodles of flowing water and rocks. Love it!

How cold was it, btw?

Low 20s both nights. Highs in the low 40s. I think it got warmer Thursday, but I was out at 9:20am.
Suter Falls was the only one that had any ice around the falls. Wish there had been more. I thought the ice at all the falls when I did the other part of Savage Gulf last month was pretty cool.
I was looking at the youtube videos, and they look fuzzy on the full screen. Wonder if it will improve. Originals looked fine on a flat screen tv...

There's a reason I carry ACE bandages...:)

Must have been cold when you were getting your feet wet. Yeah, the ice around that other falls was a pretty epic picture; you could feel the cold emanating from the falls.

The vids are fuzzy at full screen even under the 720p setting, but I've always thought that was the nature of the beast. The 720p vids on my camera never look great full screen on computer, and I've never tried them on a tv. I don't really know much about the video stuff, and so far have never bothered to educate myself. Maybe it's time.

Great pics, John! I guess we just think we know about elevation change around here!

I've been going through mine from a quick overnight(quick, ha-I drove about 8 hours total to do 8 miles of hiking:rolleyes:), and may post a separate thread again. If not this evening, then tomorrow.
tease...if you walked around the wrong side of my lopsided tent last night you'd have about 120ft to go before you hit anything else.

What an awesome campsite! :) I can't wait to get out some this weekend. Dying to spend a night or two out, especially now that I've got all this new gear to get dirty. It looks like that won't be happening until later in March though, grr.

Yes, that is the Kaweahs in the background in the second to last picture. And Sawtooth is on the left edge in front of the Kaweahs, with the big snow patch.

The last picture is looking east to the Whitney group.

Owen - I have a nice eight day trip planned for this summer, I will submit my permit application tomorrow morning. Russell may not make it, but you could always tag along.

I'm having an ongoing debate over my vacation plans, but may be able to make it this year. Might need a bigger pack!

Ha, I thought it was

Aw man, more of a bummer I won't be making it! I am doing a week-long trip with a buddy in Yosemite the weekend before John's trip, and because my work runs from week to week, I'd effectively be out of commission for 3 weeks... Argh. BUT, I will make it happen next year, for sure -- I'm booking no long trips but John's. Owen, you'd have a freaking blast!
