The NEW Post Your Campsite/gear/knife/hiking/anything Outdoorsy Pic Thread!

Nice! I feel the same. I either use Silnylon if using an inner with polycryo under for added protection, or just polycryo or tyvek if I want something really puncture resistant as the expense of absolute waterproofing. Owen's got a cuben floor he seems very happy with  I'd love to try one down the line, when I have money to spare for something like that.

More from the whale excavation. The 'leader' of the excursion gave up hope for the skull so he didn't come to the construction site today. My fossilbuddy and I went nonetheless. We still discovered a vertebra. Other finds were two dolphin hearing bones (periotica) and two shark teeth (one broken, the other one sort or less complete). I'll take some additional pictures of the finds tomorrow and post them here.

Marble Falls, Sequoia NP. This is in the lower elevations and a pretty hot hike in the summer. Spring is the time to go.

There are some small caves in the marble, they looks like snow caves

John, that's awesome  Is there no safe spot for dip? I love getting in the water on hot days.

Owen, nice! One day... Dude, I'm so jealous of you, you've been getting out a ton! I'm getting out for a little tomorrow, woohoo. Going to check out a little 40'er in the Santa Cruz Mountains that should be nice. There's another in the same park I'd like to check out at the same time, but I don't think we'll have time for the mileage required to see both tomorrow.

Great scenery John. I've seen plenty of caves in limestone or the like, but not yet in marble. Should've known better since it's quite soft as well. Quite a unique structure to that rooftop in the cave. Nice!

^^^That is cool!

So far so good. I haven't kept track of how many nights it has on it, but so far it's still like new.

I've never used cuben gear, but someone told me they saw a cuben tent get destroyed by a dog. Like the dog was over excited and just jumped on it, and it shredded like paper.

People tell me all kinds of stuff:p
I imagine the shelters are a lot easier to tear than the floor, though, since they're half as thick, and under tension.
As of yet, rocks and roots have not marked my floor. Hopefully that will continue to be true. It's about to get put up 'til next fall, since I'll be using the innernet again before long.

Galeocerdoshark: This is amazing! When I was about 10 I had a collection of fossils that I found myself. When I see your beautiful finds I still feel the excitement I felt those 30 years ago when I found a fossil in cretaceous marl. Nice. Keep posting these pics, please.

ISKski, gettin it done

I picked up an Ohm 2.0 on saturday, so I hit the trail with GF at a nearby state park to test it out and stretch the legs. We did a loop in The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, a little over 10mi and nearly 2.5k feet total climbed to check out the 40' Maple Falls they have there. It was a gorgeous day out in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and I'm in love with the Ohm 2.0, what an excellent pack.

The Forest of Nisene Marks was heavily logged from the early 1850s to support the Gold Rush and into the 1920s for later lumber needs. The area was logged so intensively that a standard-gauge rail line was built running 7 miles into the redwood filled Upper Aptos Canyon. In 1963, the Marks family from Salinas donated more than 9k acres to the state for use as a public park and natural preserve. I think the park is somewhere around 10k acres today through other donations. Basically, the park is a living and growing exhibition of the regeneration of a redwood forest. You can still see some remains of the old logging and milling operations, but in general, the forest is healing. It's actually quite a nice place; I came out quite impressed with the park.

Anyway, most of my pictures didn't turn out because we started in the afternoon and were under forest canopy much of the time, but I hope you folks enjoy a few I scavenged that weren't completely blurry from hand-shake at low ISO. Maple falls wasn't flowing as much as I would have liked, this time of year and with the little rain we've been having, but it was a fun little semi-scramble to the little waterfall along a rather pretty creek.

My phone died 2/3 into the trip, so the track was cut short. Oh well.

Here we are, Maple Falls. My camera isn't as capable as Owen's, sorry, I can't get the silky water flowing shots unless it's really dim :D

I wanted to have my GF get a shot of me sittin on the log near the falls, but the moss was pretty slippery, the log end abutting the falls didn't look very well-lodged, and I decided I'd rather not risk a fall since it wasn't a deep pool beneath. Oh well. This is about as far as I inched, haha.

A nifty little wood path constructed in a erosion-prone looking area. I don't know why I took a picture of it, other than I appreciated the work that had gone into it.

Hope to have some better pics for you guys on the next outing. Anyway, hope everyone had a great weekend.

Oh yeah, Ohm 2.0 pics!

I had a regular Zlite in there as a frame, in addition to day-hike gear/clothing and lunch for the GF and I. Awesome pack, more thoughts on it later as I get out to use it more often, but boy am I really happy with it. The hipbelt is the best I've ever experienced, no contest. I'm pretty sure it'll make an excellent day-hike --> 4-5 day pack. The only negative I can note at this point, which I knew about going in, is that the pack back isn't breathable mesh or contoured for ventilation. Didn't really bother me, but this wasn't a hot hike, and I prefer any weight sitting closer to my back anyway.

Thanks milani! It was fun! I'll be getting Circuit pics to you soon, buddy, later this week or next weekend.

I pulled a couple hunting-related items off my pack today and adjusted the straps for lighter clothes and decided to get out for a few minutes before dusk.
Then I walked up the path behind the house, played with some sticks, poked things, looked at the nearby sugaring buckets.
Stupid knifemaker cuts finger *again* with same knife. Story never.
After band-aiding, found a downed pine limb that had bled out the cut/break. Sticky. Seems to comes off with acetone. What do you guys use to harvest fatwood? and it comes from stumps, right?

No pretty outdoors pix like above, but I did get pine sap on my knife so I call it a success. :D
But seriously, what do you do? I didn't want to put the knife back in the sheath with all the glop on it. Fortunately it was only a 60yd walk to the house.

If you carry alcohol based hand sanitizer or PJCBs they'll do the job. Something non-polar like petroleum jelly or an organic solvent like the ethanol in hand sanitizer is likely to do the trick well enough and be on you.

Back from an overnighter with a buddy in Butano State Park, excellent lil trip. Here a few pics. I'm too lazy to narrate these right now, so just enjoy them for what they are :D
