The NEXT SALE

I just can't fathom as to how a preorder list on here, this subforum, will not become any less than a usual feeding frenzy of late which we have witnessed and some (me) have been a part of! If Nathan constructs a preorder thread say for 30 units of the CPK-FK, I think that will be all gobbled up in less than 2 minutes, tops! i still foresee a problem with this regard because CPK does not have its own website with a preorder set of books like Survive! does and from what I gather reading in between lines, CPK does not wish to commit the same mistakes by having a preorder book opened for an extended length of time. I think that market saturation here on the BF is easily in the realm, if not in excess of 100 units per CPK models. There are probably about 40-50 diehards and then the same number from words of mouth and other advertising channels such as Carothers FB & social media outlets. I think that since early may, CPK has sold close to 40-50 LCs in the new D3V if I'm not mistaken and I noticed that there were less bidders last Friday although the 5 on offer were still gobbled up within 15 seconds!

I'm by no means an expert in retail sales and strategy. But I foresee hurt feelings if there is both a pre-order list and Friday sales for the same model. Definitely something to think about.

I say do the normal Friday sale for whatever amount of knifes , say 20 , then you have 60 people posting to buy , boom there is your pre order list of 40 people in chronological order . Send payment and wait for your sweet blade to arrive !

^^^ This could work for an initial preorder list should the Friday's Sales Thread participants, those unsuccessful ones, wish to remain on such list. I know that I would :)

re: the preorder list

I really don't think it matters much what I do, until things hit saturation and slow down a little there are going to be some people who aren't happy with whatever direction I go.

I like not having a list. It's easy. I make stuff, I post it for sale, it sells. Rinse and repeat. From my point of view this is nice and simple. I don't see any way having a list can be simpler than that.

Years ago I kept a list. I swore never again.

But, the current situation is very different. I'm very fortunate and grateful to have a good turn out at the sales. The week's inventory sells pretty quick and the last few months only a few folks with very fast keyboard-fu are able to get the gear they want. So, in order to accommodate regular folks (people like me for example) who just want to order a knife and don't want the drama I am going to try a list for the Field Knives. They could get their gear, it would just come with a longer wait time. Depending on the depth of the list possibly 6 months. I'll close the list before it gets too deep. I plan to take people's money in advance, this simplifies things for me and forces a commitment from the person putting themselves on the list.

Here's the preliminary plan, y'all tell me what you think:

I continue to crank out work at my regular pace. This is about ten knives per week, depending on the pattern. I continue to do my weekly sale on Fridays and put 5 on that sale. Then I put the balance (whatever that is) towards the list, first come-first serve.

Here's the beautiful part. I don't keep up with the list, it's a thread - it is the list. It is public, and people can see where they are on the order.

This is how it would work:
1: A person places an order with details of what they want.
2: Jo contacts that person and gets payment and shipping address information.
3: Once it's paid I can edit the post and mark it paid.
4: I build the order when it comes around.
5: Once it's shipped I can edit the post and mark it shipped

These would be the rules:
Only one single post per person in the entire thread. That way I'm not going back and forth trying to decide what some person finally decided they want, that and the endless emails would be the nightmare of the original list that I swore I'd never do again. If a person wants to change their order they can simply edit their post and all the information is right there in one spot.

This means the list would only be open to paying members, not registered users, because you'd need the ability to edit your post and you'd need the ability to send and receive PMs (because email through the forum is hit-and-miss)

I'd be implementing this in the upcoming week. What do you guys think?

Good solution and limits to paying members...extra perk.
But what if someone comes in right away and lists say five field knives all different handles...that gonna be ok? not that i'm gonna.

Nathan, so that I understand you correctly, you are going to make another preorder thread and sticky it and taking preorders per your terms, correct? Is this going to be also implemented on Fridays, after your regular "For Sale" thread?

Yeah, if for some reason they want five knives. But if they're just buying them to turn around and flip I'd have a problem with that. So far that hasn't been a problem.

Some time next week I'll create a preorder thread here on our forum. This one thread will live for a few months and accumulate orders on the Field Knife.

Since Nate did not stipulate any limitations in the number of units one could order, he either forgot about it or if I guess correctly, he is not opposed to it. That said, he needs to come up with a more refined system to weed out the speculators (I'm not expecting too many of those and he has already stated that he will not be tolerating A-Holes). Also, if CPK is amenable to a multitude of orders from the same person, they will need to implement a fairer system so that a person who orders say 5 units, does not clog up the delivery system based on first come-first served.

Now I would be the first to admit as to why someone would place multiple orders and the reasons are not necessarily because of speculation or having deeper pockets than most so to hoard. Some average folks may be placing proxy orders at their own risk for none paying members, or buy a few for their family/friends and also possibly to use one and to save one up in the safe!

Hmm. Money up front. This list will be serious business.

I think it will be fine as it's money up front. Even if it's filling fast it will still fill way slower than a Friday sales thread.

I like it.

Though I'm in the minority, any plan for accommodating non-paying members?

It would obviously be more work for you, but maybe you could put the names of those signed up in the order they signed up in your original post, then edit that list as the knives complete/ship?

I'm curious about something.

If I arrange for a spot on the list for say two field knives, and pay, can I add to my order once more funds become available if my order has not been filled yet?

I've got a couple/three kids to buy one of those beauties for. Funds are tight ATM due to the new baby coming and me being out of work for a few weeks.

Sob story aside, no answer will hurt my feelings. :D I'm a big boy and just want to know the rules before cashing in.

Thanks

I think that the issues he raised were:

- Would like for Jo to contact participants in the preorder thread via PM for payment and shipping information, as the BF email system can be hit and miss!

- "None paying members are unable to modify their posts", is I believe that what was said!

Not that there are no other ways to remedy these inconveniences but then again, I'm not the Chief on here ;)

You're very right, you're not the chief on here. ;)

Therein lies the dilemma!

I think that for all intends and purposes once the post is marked paid and awaiting fulfillment, then that preorder post ought to be considered "closed" to be fair to everyone else. Otherwise it should definitely be closed when marked paid and not be able to be perpetually updated!

No disrespect is meant to you THT.
