The Official FrankenBecker Mod-Off (here we go)

Update: It's done. Too dark for good photos, will shoot for getting some tonight and then packaging 'er up.

I can't wait to see some photos in good light. That thing is looking sweet man! Have you tried using different color chord before? The reason I ask is i think a smaller knife like a 14 or remora would look cool with one of those too. Very nice BRL.

This is my first time using black; previously everything was dark brown. I did my BK11 and like how it turned out, and am considering doing a wrap on my 13 (although I'm halting all knife projects until I get my act back together on Real Life stuff heh). On the 13 I might do something fun like purple or whatever.

Those look really comfortable! I was thinking that a nice green would look pretty awesome on a little 13. Does the chord usually keep the color that is comes or does it darken from the glue?

That's pretty much how it looks once it comes out of the dye and dries. The epoxy doesn't do anything that I can tell except get shiny. Doing the wraps above showed me that I've got to be careful about hiding the epoxy as much as possible to avoid the "shiny" look which I don't like. The FB is the closest I've gotten so far, although you can see glints here and there more than I would like, but ultimately I'm just not all that great at doing these. Rick Marchand here on BFC does really dreamy wraps; look up that dude's knives if you want to see some done by an actual professional.

Damn that thing really did a transformation throughout this process. Very impressive work fellows. Can't wait to see the finished project.

BRL have you sent it onward to get a new set of pants??

and of course I am now trying to find the best deal on a BK7 online haha. And trying to find a desert model...I think that thing would just be awesome.

Nope, I'm waiting for clich to hit me up with 1066vik's addy (plus I still need to take some pics).

I'll tell ya what, man... handling the FB convinced me to buy my own BK7 and damn if I didn't fall in love with it. That's my truck knife now.

BRL, well done with those wraps I think this will be well worth the wait. I like it, a lot.

I don't doubt it. I haven't ever owned any Beckers, or really many good quality survival type knives ever as I usually buy hunting knives. I did just order a RAT 3 though, so the Becker is going to have to wait a little bit. I was debating between a RAT/Esee or a Becker, and thought I wanted the BK2 but the more I see the more I like the 7.

Get a BK2 or 7 you wont be sorry!

I think either the BK2 or BK7 would be a nice compliment to the 3 since they have different strengths and weaknesses.

Pics. Note that I used two different types of hemp, which you can kinda see in the photos. One is real rough and cool and "hempy" but in wrapping my hawk with it, I felt that for long term use it would be murder on your hands. So I only used it at the top part, so you get the extra grippiness for your index finger, and at the end to keep your hand from sliding. I used a softer, more string-like hemp for the middle section.

Got a few smudges of epoxy on Murph's really cool finish. Bummed about that.

COOL!
Now it needs a suitably styled sheath to go with it!

So I figure there's only one way to make up for being so damn late and holding everything up...

Here it goes, under the knife. Er, on the knife, under the file.

Beer for the save! (root variety, the rest went into tonight's chili)

I wish I had a mid-sized round file to round the notch out better.
Unfortunately I was obsessed with getting the geometry to work and didn't realize I'd undercut the grips a tiny bit, but I think someone's making new grips anyway.

Clich, pm me the next butcher!
