The Official Lanyard Thread

Reorganizing my knives today, I realized just how many I have yet to make...
...
One little compartment in my dresser top box contained one Indian Chief head, a Cowboy head, a Skull & Rose, an Emerson Skull, 2 little Buck anvils, and 4 little skulls, all lanyards I had planned on making but totally forgot about until today... Also an official Olamic Owl bead, but still need to get that Olamic to put it on...
...
Well, something to do this weekend...

A good group right there, lot of work for sure, happy holidays to you sir!

and a tip for folks starting out and maybe for those with a practiced hand, cut the ends of your paracord steep so that it is more needle like that blunt, this will help threading the ends of your paracord through your knot making a lot easier. And for those times when you have a stubborn bead, I pull out the inner strands on one end about 2" or so and then I am able to 'forcibly' pull both through the bead, unless it is far too small a hole, you can usually get it pulled through.

Here's a quick photo of what I mean by cutting the ends steep, at an angle and then take a lighter to melt it down but do it carefully so as not to end back up with a blunt end.

Also thought I'd add this little bit, reason that I do what's called a whipping knot close to the knife handle, it helps to keep things under control, otherwise your lanyard could wander into the path of the blade;

Here is the same lanyard but with the whipping knot tied so it keeps the lanyard out of the way of the blade, also it doesn't thicken up the lanyard at that point, making it easier for your pinky to wrap around and come up against the diamond knot to draw the knife out

A friend sent his folder up for a lanyard, he wanted some black with orange type paracord, I didn't have that at the time and so I tried merging the two together while I waited on the 'real' stuff to arrive, but he ended up liking this combination better, and so did I, tricky to keep the weld slim enough to wrap under the whipping knot but it worked out great.

Thanks sir

Here’s a video I did to show how to tie the whipping knot

Start with a loop that is just past the lanyard hole

Start wrapping the thread around the two strands tightly

Once you get close to the end you will use pliers to pull the one strand so it tightens up where you started out

Then put the strand through the loop and pull the loop tightly so you pull the knot under the wrap

Use scissors to cut the strand and carefully pull the cut off end under the wrap until it’s out of sight

Then cut the other end off and you’re done

Nice work, I am leary of random cutoffs as it depends on what they started out in life as, paracords are not all the same quality so I've been staying with those that have proved solid for me, just a couple as there seems to be so many people that are selling it these days.

Nice whipping action there ;)

Yes. That's why I only buy from one company now. Cord is always the same. This box just has a few random color issues and it looks like a few breaks so they couldn't get a full 100 feet.

That came out nice! Love the bead and color combo!
I like how you finished the tails also. Might have to try that on a couple.
