The Old Rugged Victorinox Cross..... Pioneer content, grails and such.... Red Gold...

IMO, the Farmer is the ultimate..... Robust, all the tools you need, none of the ones you don't. Extremely pocketable.... a real woodsman's knife. The Pioneer is obviously next in line. You can make due with the Pioneer in the woods, it's a little more difficult, but you get by.

The Cadet..... Very slim. The blade can be made very sharp, it's very useful. The can opener and bottle opener tools work great. Screwdrivers work great.... I was always disappointed with the use of the nail file vs a reamer. That Cadet would be awesome with the reamer. I've seen the conversions and they just don't look right. I've always thought less of the Cadet because of it..... though I loved the slim profile.

Well, I found a good use for that little nail file. It's a use that earns it's keep and isn't for just to keep your nails looking pretty. That nail file lacks sharp edges. When you get a knot that is too tight, you can't use the Farmer or the Pioneer to get that knot undone. You need a point that doesn't cut.... kinda like those English Clasp knives, that little nail file fills this role pretty well. Especially with stuff like paracord or maybe that knot in your sweat pants. ;)

I Agree, the Farmer and Pioneer are by far the most useful yet not cluttered with extra tools.

I'll drink to that....I mean I agree as well.:foot:

You had it right the first time!

uh oh. he isnt as purty as your farmer perhaps
but much more pocket friendly...

might end up swapping alox preciouses :p

The Pioneer is a lot of tool in a slim package that's for sure... This thread played no small part in my "needing" this Pioneer, lol

You gotsa Army Wife! Ain't seen one of those for years. Mine got away somewhere during several moves after those Army years.

Now I'm thinking I might need to pick one up again to go with the Demo knife I finally managed to score at a price I was happy with to replace the one I had that got away. A 1987 Camillus. Comparing that Demo to my Farmer I see that the Farmer is only the very tiniest bit thicker, but has more tools, a better awl, and the key ring attachments is much smaller than the bail on the Demo. While I have a nostalgic bent for the Camillus and my Pilot's Survival knife due to my Army time, the Farmer just has such a nicer bit of refinement, carries a little easier, and has more tools.

You know for those won't ship to the U.S. and allies, maybe someone over in Afghanistan or maybe someone stationed in the Sinai with the MFO could manage to buy up a small stash of those African market SAKs using a non APO address then resell to the West.

Off topic:
I lost a kit like that in the '06 fire, bought it back in the late 70's. Last couple of years I've bought up some various countries army kits to make camp/backpack sewing kits but that GI one was just too nice to part out. The best needles and such are in the old army kits...no cheap. low quality stuff.

One of my repair/sewing kits:

BTW Amos, can you date that "Army Wife" kit? The lady that sold it to me said it was her Dad's and he was a Korean War Vet.
