The Old Rugged Victorinox Cross..... Pioneer content, grails and such.... Red Gold...

Arizonaranchman,

I have a Leatherman pouch just like yours that I've considered using for knives, but I worry about the pouch's inside rivets for the belt loop scratching up the knife. Based on your experience, is that a valid concern? Thanks!

If you're concerned about marring the finish then yes it could be. I know on my Leatherman, which rode in this pouch for 20 years, has a few small little scuff marks where the rivets are. I'm not bothered by it personally, but it's a concern for those who are mindful of this.

Thanks for the info! A little wear on the handles of my Leatherman hasn't bothered me, but I guess I'm one of those who would be bothered by "self-imposed" scratches on bone or bolsters of some of my "nice" knives.

My old cross Electrician showed up in yesterday's mail! It was pretty cruddy and had no snap at all to any of the implements when it arrived. A quick bath in parts cleaner, a little scrubbing, some oil, and some sharpening time, and it is as good as new. :)

This is my first experience with the Electrician pattern. I like it, although I don't think it's going to boot my Pioneer out of my pocket any time soon. Still, a neat piece of Victorinox history!

IMO, the Farmer is the ultimate..... Robust, all the tools you need, none of the ones you don't. Extremely pocketable.... a real woodsman's knife. The Pioneer is obviously next in line. You can make due with the Pioneer in the woods, it's a little more difficult, but you get by.

The Cadet..... Very slim. The blade can be made very sharp, it's very useful. The can opener and bottle opener tools work great. Screwdrivers work great.... I was always disappointed with the use of the nail file vs a reamer. That Cadet would be awesome with the reamer. I've seen the conversions and they just don't look right. I've always thought less of the Cadet because of it..... though I loved the slim profile.

Well, I found a good use for that little nail file. It's a use that earns it's keep and isn't for just to keep your nails looking pretty. That nail file lacks sharp edges. When you get a knot that is too tight, you can't use the Farmer or the Pioneer to get that knot undone. You need a point that doesn't cut.... kinda like those English Clasp knives, that little nail file fills this role pretty well. Especially with stuff like paracord or maybe that knot in your sweat pants. ;)

Nice tip for the nail file on the Cadet!

I have a Farmer, a few Pioneers, and a Cadet and log ether all. I EDC the Pioneer as I have no need for a saw on a regular basis and I love the tool selection and reasonably slim profile. The awl is amazing, I poked a perfect little hole in some leather the other day and was shocked at how perfectly the awl performed....hole was so clean and precise! But, I have found a nail file to come in handy too...mostly when playing too much with other slipjoints, some with pretty stout springs which did some damage to my thumb nail. Nice to be able to use the blade to make a little grim and the file to smooth out the any ragged edges.

I love these knives, can't believe I've been carrying nothing but the Pioneer for a few weeks now. They just work too well to leave home.

All of these old crosses are really giving me the itch for one. You guys are enablers! Alox enablers!

Ain't gonna' happen...the brain surgeons on the Dark Continent won't ship to the US, even though their web site says they ship overseas. I wasted a call talking to some customer dis-service person who stated the US, Canada, and Israel are on their poop list, but will ship to any country in the Middle East, North Korea, Russia, Eastern bloc nations, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Somolia, Afghanistan, etc.

Got a spare one NIB silver Alox Solo.
If you're interested shoot me a mail and it's yours :)
