The one knife everyone should own at some point in their life!

A Tramontina or Imacasa machete. Everything else is just for fun or frills. There are many places in the world where a machete serves as a tool for everything, in countless ways.

Probably been asked before but I found nothing when trying to search it. So here it is... What is the one knife everyone should own at some point in their life?
Every man, some time in his life, should commission a one-off made just for him by a maker he respects. A single specimen without another like knife out there. A truly custom made knife.

Here's mine. A belt knife by Tom Mayo 18-19 years ago before is name and knives got so famous.

Every man should own one such knife "at some point in his life".

SAK. first and always. Everyone will have another choice of course; we all have our favorites. There will always be a need for a kitchen utility of some kind also, and there are plenty of stylistic variations.

I think at a bare minimum there are three

a low end beater
a middle of the the road " i worry about it but am willing to use it knife"
and a high end I cant / wont use it knife...your budget will vary knife

just so the user will know what he wants to use verses what he is willing to use verses what he can afford to otherwise we are all duel wielding gold plated zt561s heat treated in the fires of mount doom !!!!

other then that probably a standard zt 561 :)

Having looked at some pictures, i cannot fathom why i would want to own one of them.....

For me, a great deal of the Opinel charm is in the blade and the simplicity. They get really sharp, and are a cheap knife that you can modify without much worry. From the looks, I don't love 'em, but once you get one one really nicely sharpened and get to use it, they slice with the best of 'em.

...and a high end I cant / wont use it knife...
I won't own a knife, a gun, or a watch I won't use. No safe queens for me.

A tool is not a tool unless it has been used, and I want tools I'm not afraid of using.

A Tracker, in whatever variant. If you're going to make a judgement on something at least have a basis for it. Love it or hate it, give one a try. To clarify, I'm not a fan of it and I own a version. It's one that gets brought up a lot.

a low end beater__________Yes
a middle of the the road " i worry about it but am willing to use it knife"__________Sure
and a high end I cant / wont use it knife...your budget will vary knife__________No, the more expensive a knife is the more I want it to be able to take any beating.

I wouldn't use an expensive knife for unreasonable jobs, I'd use a beater. But the expensive one should be able to do the job better.

A quality bread knife! I always feel sort of ripped off if I'm having dinner at someone's house and the slices of bread have been mangled/squished.

For most normal people a SAK and a Mora will do every task needed and last a lifetime.

A Sebenza? Really? The question is what one knife should EVERYONE own in their lifetime. Most normal people are unaware then there is even a brand of pocketknife that starts at around four hundred dollars. Sorry we might tell ourselves we need a Sebenza but that's not true. A Sebenza is a luxury item/knife.

Everyone should have a Swiss Army knife. (Real one not knockoff.) Bought sharp and kept sharp. I would also suggest that it would be a great idea for anyone that cooks to also have a decent sharp paring knife/chef's knife combo also. More important than the type of knife might be an idea that every person should go through training and have to earn a totin' chip. (Boy scout knife/axe safety training)

Grizz

Buck 110. The world could end at this point, you now own the only knife you really needed in your lifetime. Close the thread. :D
