The one that got away

I haven’t regretted selling anything I’ve sold. When I think it’s time to move something along, I usually wait a bit before throwing it up on the block just to be sure. So far I’m not missing anything I’ve unloaded. There are a few that I’ve been looking for that are no longer available, but they didn’t actually get away, because I never had a crack at them to begin with.

Does one that almost got away count? I first saw this in a gift shop in NH of all places while on vacation. Buck Sprint Ops Pro. I loved the look of it at first sight, then got to fiddle with it and loved everything about it. But it was a bit more than I wanted to spend on a knife at the time, and I was watching the funds for other vacation activities. When I got back home I kind of let it go for awhile; but when I decided to check the online places for it, it was out of stock almost everywhere. I finally found it back in stock on the Buck web site, and I snapped it up on the spot. Now I’m glad I did, because it can’t be found anywhere. It’s still one of my favorites in the collection.

I’ve bought and sold quite a few epic Gossman and Beck knives over the years. I wish I had a few back, but I have never been a good collector. I am working on it.
 
I tried the Benchmade anthem out in person at my local hunting store when the anthem first came out. I don’t think I could’ve afforded it either way but after actually holding it I felt very underwhelmed and decided against it. I guess it didn’t “get away” but now if I ever wanted to own one, (which I definitely do) I would have to pay a lot more than the price the store was selling it for, which still wasn’t cheap. It’s almost become one of those “I remember when they were x amount of dollars.” Regardless of the scarcity, I’ve never been willing to pay over 50% (or even less) on a knife I already know the original retail price of

I didn’t know if “got away” is the term I’d use but I had a chance to buy a beautiful stag handled Loveless Drop point Hunter made in his Riverside shop but the seller knew what he had and I’m just a poor country boy.
As a side note Im guessing a large percent Loveless knives on the market today are sadly counterfeit, the one I was looking at might have been one as well. If there’s money to be made some one will take the risk.

My first high end knife was a Chris Reeve Project II. I bought it in Amsterdam in my early twenties. I had to sell it because we needed a new car. I was 21 or 22 when I bought it. I am 46 now and still miss that knife. I am always looking for an old stock in pristine condition. That was the only knife I ever sold in my years of collecting.
 
I have some that I sold back in the day. Thinking back, I just wish I had enough sense to hold on to certain ones.

-Military CF/Ti/S90V
-BM-HK 14255 reverse tanto
-BM Skirmish
-Sebenza with blue circuit graphics
-Manix2 in CruWear and CF.

There’s more but I need to stop now. I’m depressing myself.
 
Full Ti XM-18 in Nichols damascus with a milled lock side. Got cart ganked on it. That was about 3 years ago, before Hinderer redid their website. It still pisses me off when I think about it.
 
Just 3 years ago I had the opportunity to buy a Randall Smithsonian Bowie with curly maple handle for about 700, I passed because of circumstance. That deal is not likely to happen again.
 
A few years ago, I had a friend offer me one of my wanted knives…a Scott Cook Lochsa. Gold stud, MOP pivot, S90V blade…exactly what I was looking for…for $1200.

Sadly at the time I couldn’t afford it. Man, that one stings.

Sounds like my thing above. Bet we both will continue to kick ourselves for years!
 
I had to sell my first gen Massdrop Laconico Keen (produced by WE) to a nice member here in a pinch to help pay for some scans for ma. It's my only regret :(

Saying that, I sure wish there was a deep carry clip option for it along with all the other MBK knives. I pray they bring back the XLC one day, it's my grail.

I'm fortunate in that 95% of folding knives just don't appeal to me, design wise. The few that do always happen to be $500 or more.. such is life!
 
Biggest mistake I ever made was trading away a MUDD auto . . .

Not a mistake because I loved it so much but because it skyrocketed so much in value after I did. 🤷‍♂️

Sounds like it was a great cause though. Some things are more important.

Have had two 16 Special Fighters - nickel silver guards and black micarta border patrol handles. Had to sell the first one during a pinch, then several years later when things were better bought the second. Then a little later on the second had to go. 😂
 
Just like most people that don't own it, I regret not getting the original Spyderco Slysz Bowie when I had the chance. Also there was this ring knife that Bark River did, the Donnybrook, that I regret not getting.
