The one that got away

Up late, musing. Am reading these and what really grabs me are not the exotics, but the high quality production knives - like the Al Mar Shiva.

Yeah they were a little pricey, but I had the money(!). Now they are for the most part.... out of reach 😂

I agree with you.. I had a stack of Al Mar blades with the serial number of 008/200, Me like a dumb@ss traded them off.. I traded one of the Al Mar's for the Emerson/Nealy knife in the early 90s right before I retired from the military.. Still have the Emerson/Nealy and still kicking myself in the @ss for doing that deal.. The Al Mar knives are long gone, but the memories still remain..

The 80s were the days of opportunity for high value factory knives made in the USA - and Japan - at very reasonable prices. Yeah I am kicking myself 😂.

Now knives like the Emerson?Neely knife that made blade knife of the year is hard to sell or even give away.. I traded this knife off for another knife and the guy I traded it with brought it back a month later and said it was not to his liking, so I took it back and traded another.. The knife is sitting in the bottom drawer of my computer desk and hasn't seen day light in years.. Can't even flip it to divers as a dive knife out here in the Pacific.

I mean retrospectively maybe missing out on the bark River isn't so bad?
 
I went to one of the first Cold Steel parking lot sales when they were in Ventura. There were stacks of swords at $60 with various imperfections, sometimes just on the scabbard or missing a scabbard. Their swords handle a bit like sharpened crowbars, but for that price I should have picked up more than a couple and learned how to distal taper. I did get two Chinese models with very nice furniture and finish that would be in the $350-$450 range now, but I could have stretched the budget a bit more at the time.

Darn, wish I would have been there as well!
 
Neither are anything SUPER special or incredibly sought after, but both were special to me.

The Shannon Carter Urge was a commission piece- jade G10 with natural micarta pins, and a fantastically polished scandi grind. Sharp as it was beautiful.
It’s been over ten years, but if memory serves I sold it to a forum member in Florida. Wish I could track it down now.

The BM 761 was a First Production (#40 I think) that I bought at Sparks shop in Louisville. It was my primary EDC for many years.
Why did I sell it? I dunno.
One day I’ll buy another.
