The practicality of multiple blades

I carry multiple knives and MT's. Have been for more than 30 years. Many times the redundancy has come in very handy. I also have never really understood the issues that MikeH mentioned. And everything stays well concealed since I can legally do so. I go by the "Better to have and not need than need and not have" theory. How much things weigh has also never been an issue with me.

A knife isn't your most important tool and if it's the story I think it is, he made it without one. ;) If you're relying on a knife to get you through, you've already made several mistakes.

Listen to Shotgun, for he is wise...

So what happens when you hit your head and wake up naked? :)
You thank your lucky stars the muggers only took your shit. Then you make your way towards people and hope you come across some good people first.

Yes, if you are relying on a knife to save your bacon you are already very far up the proverbial creek and a knife doesn't make for a very good paddle.

I carry multiple knives. A folder in each front pocket and a small fixed on my hip. That's for EDC. Around the farm or machinery or out hunting/fishing, I add a 2nd fixed on the left. The flip answer is because I can. The primary reason boils down to one word - preparedness.

If I'm up a tree or ladder or on a roof and I drop my knife (not all of them have lanyard options), I can pull out the other one and, hoping the first one didn't get too screwed up, keep working.

If I'm doing "X" with one hand and I get hung up in something remotely cutable, the knives on the other side are available. My goal is to NOT need a second (or 3rd) knife, but I'd rather have them and not need them.

As far as ever having a day where I didn't use a knife???? Never happens. Least case scenario is fixing breakfast -something gets cut and/or spread every meal.

I always carry at least two. A 3 1/2" to 4" traditional in the RFP and a modern flipper clipped in the RRP, around town. Fixed blade as well when heading into the woods, fishing, hunting, camping/hiking etc.

I normally have two near me at all times. I have a Delica in the front pocket, my Leatherman Wingman in my zipper pocket on the front chest area. Then I have one in my armrest in the car, one in the trunk. When I hunt I typically have a fixed blade on the belt, folder in the pocket and another folder in my pack.

I think if you are going to carry multiple blades, one of them should be a multitool or you are just being overly redundant.

I carry lots of crap.
I have no car or truck, so the "car knife" becomes a "backpack knife".
Plus two to three pocket knives (depends on how many pockets I have).
And some copies of my book to sell on the go.
And some rope (always should have rope).
And band-aids.
And water.
And some copies of the newspaper my book review and interview were in (to hand out on the go).
And a ferro rod.
And a lighter.
And big garbage bags.
And an umbrella.
And another book or two to read.
And disinfectant.
And nitrile gloves.
And Kevlar gloves.
And pepper spray for dogs.
And pain pills, muscle relaxers, and antihistamines.

And some other things.

Do you guys see why I don't care if a pocket-knife weighs more than 4 ounces? :D

I like to have two knives on me and will about %60 of my edc will have two knives and sometimes two blades with a multitool, but it also depends. I can have 3 blades on if I am going hunting fishing or outdoors in general (hiking etc..) one is usually a fixed. On my edc one of my knives is usually smaller and for edc tasks and another is usually a bigger knife that could be used for defense or harder cutting tasks.

I usually have 5 or so on me in town. I don't need 5, or even 3, or really, 2, but I am OCD about leaving knives at home. I have a hard time deciding what to put in the pockets for the day.

Yeah, that covers me too. I can't decide what to leave behind and end up with 2-3 on me, and more in my bag too usually. Even here at home relaxing I have two on me.

I always carry two knives. A large (my regular knife) and a small (2.5" to 3" blade). Usually the small knife is my loaner when someone needs to borrow it.

The fact that you carry knives, nitrile gloves, and a big trash bag worries me lol

I think we like to make justifications for having multiple knives in our head because we "want to carry them" but don't "need more than one". I am sure some rare cases may require multiple blades if they are different such as a boning knife and a multitool. Do most of us actually need several knives? I doubt it. Do I carry multiple knives, yes because I like knives. nothing wrong with saying that. I have a PM2 and a cadet on me at the moment. Could the cadet handle most of all the cutting jobs I would realistically have? Yea probably. Is the Para2 better for self defense or quick deployment, totally. I dont plan on using a knife for "tactical or self defense" reasons I just like having a quick deploying blade. My favorite combination is a larger blade like a Spyderco Endura and smaller serrated blade like a Spyderco Dragonly2 salt. The big blade was for slicing, opening beers, sticking a perp (jk) and the Smaller serrated blade was for cutting packages, plastic, rope.

that chicken deserved what it got.... strutting around flauning that perfectly browned skin, it was asking for it....

I like to carry 2; one reference sharp on my left and one heavy user on my right. That way if i need to dig splinters or some other surgical task i wont have a tip thats run through 25 boxes and doesnt want to bite.

Boy Scout motto "Be Prepaired" I think this applys. If you feel you need more that one knife, flashlight, lighter or whatever than do it your not hurting anyone.

I tend to carry 3 knives when out and about. A Gerber Shortcut, a Peanut, and a more sizable knife from my EDC rotation. I used to just carry the Shortcut and the EDC but I now also carry a Peanut just because I really like the little knife and enjoy keeping it on me.

When in the house, I tend to just carry the Peanut.

I always carry at least two blades, if you consider the little blade on my P4 Squirt that is always with me. Many time I will EDC two knives as well. One on the small side, such as a Spyderco Squirt or a Kershaw Scallion. And then a larger knife like a ZT or a Spyderco Millitary. Another reason that I sometimes carry two knives is when I'll be working with someone who may not have a knife on them. In THAT case, I will carry a a SanRenMu, a CRKT, or an inexpensive Kershaw as my second, in case I need to let someone use a knife. After having a couple of good quality knives damaged by friends and co-workers, I never loan one of my better knives

I hear ya! I always have a sacrificial beater knife in my bag or on my person for that same reason.

I usually carry 2 knives, small multi-tool and a flashlight in my pockets. In my bag I keep another knife, compact sharpening kit, large multi-tool and a headlamp plus spare batteries.
