The practicality of multiple blades

Probably no one else here is either.
Certain terms get old really fast:
-Weekend warrior
-Sheeple
-Mall Ninja
-Fanboy
-Hater

They derail the discussion, and discourage actual, genuine thought about the original issue.

I apologize. I didn't know it was an overused term, but now that I look at it was a wrong choice of words.

This is what I carried today . I hope it shows up trying to upload pictures . http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/...7403116e45640996b2bcc702893fe_zps4bedd062.jpg

The "murder kit" needs duct tape.

Well, to be fair, in a car it would be considered being prudent...I'll stash my stuff in a car rather than a backpack if you want to buy me a car :)(and gas, and insurance, and repairs...)

I apologize. I didn't know it was an overused term, but now that I look at it was a wrong choice of words.

No worries; I've used terms I later found to be not quite right plenty of times. I most likely will plenty more.

I usually have a folder in my RFP along with either a Victorinox Minichamp or SD depending on which set of keys I have on me. My work bag will have a Gerber Clutch as well as an additional folder (with glassbreaker). Otherwise, if I have my "man purse"/Maxpedition bag with me I'll usually have a folder in there or my SAK.

So at least 2 and possibly up to 4.

I always edc two blades. A large case stockman and a gerber harsey that I got as a gift for standing in a wedding. The stockman is great because it offers three specialized blades. The gerber is great because its stainless and can be cleaned easily in hot soapy water and its open design allows for quick dry time. I find my stockman works wood great and peels fruit and veggies exceptionally well. The gerber is just good for quick access (via pocket clip) and ease of cleaning. On occasion I will also edc a third knife which is either a spyderco bushcraft or a brkt aurora. I like more than one option on me because some knives work better on certain media/conditions than others.

I carry 1 or 2 depending if I put one on my belt. But I usually have extras in my truck or in my bag if I'm going out for the day.

I always have a left and right Spyderco Military on me. Also a Leatherman Charge multi tool, and a very small folder that I use as a sheeple knife. Any more and I'd feel like there was something wrong with me mentally. :D

I take one knife with me (victorinox on the keys doesn't really count), but I am a city person and it doesn't really make sense to carry more than one knife at a time.

I understand people carrying their favorite $2000 custom and a cheaper $20 kershaw so that people can borrow their cheap knife.

I have nothing against carrying multiple knives, in fact if I were to go camping I'd easily pack more than two blades...

The practicality of having multiple blades really depends on where you are and what you are doing. If you job requires it or you are out in the wilderness, sure. But if you have an office job, and you day consists of commute, office job, commute, I really don't see a reason to have more than one knife on you at a time...

Knowledge of how to survive was clearly his most important asset. Truth is he didn't even need a knife, though I'm sure one would have made his situation a lot easier. Without his lighter though his chances would have dropped fast. 20 degree temps and snow would be hard to take without a fire and/or better clothes.

Whatever else we learn from this, it also sounds like he needed a better way to carry his gear. How did he lose so much in a fall yet still have his rifle? All the stuff in the world is no good if you don't have it when you need it.

In town its a Sak in my left front ( either my mechanic or my 84mm electrician) and one more folder in my right front usually a carbon steel knife about 3.5-4 inches ( right now my GEC farmer lock) if I go in the woods maybe my izula II in my back pocket and if I need more than that I bring the bk9 on my pack and/or a hatchet. Only variation on this is when I go near saltwater my front right pocket gets swapped for something stainless

Life is a matter of playing the odds. It is also true that "a second gun is faster than a reload"...but I don't carry two guns.

If I were going into the woods, or entering into possible combat, I would outfit myself to match the possibility. For me, in my daily life, one folder seems to be sufficient.

The more the merrier! ;)

One is none, two is one... :)

(ok I'm all out)

This is too easy...

"a pair and a spare"

We have discussed multiple blade carry in the past. One scenario could be that a person wants to borrow your knife and you don't want to give them your good folder so you give them the cheap secondary folder that you carry.

Another scenario is that you carry a good folder for your normal cutting duties, then carry a beater for when you need to cut something that you wouldn't cut with your good folder.

A third scenario would be if you expect cutting chores that are significantly different and you want to carry one knife for one use and another knife for a different use.

I have carried a second knife occasionally and I have carried a multitool occasionally. I have not found the perfect second knife yet though.
