The Puukko

This is one of my favorite puukko. Made by grandfather of Harri Merimaa of Woodsknife. Signed in fuller "Kuuree". He worked in the mid 40's to mid 50's according to the late Ragnar. The grooved pommel is his trademark style. Wood handle with mid string wrap and Finnish decal. I emailed Harri Merimaa to confirm it was his grandfather make.

Robin

Two beautiful Puukko. Love the looks of both. Any idea of maker on the carved wood one?
Show more puukko everyone. Don't let this thread die.

That lion one is intense  :) Yes, I agree with Rich - OK to show the same ones in different settings, to keep us all inspired.

I told myself I could have one puukko. I chose a small Tapio Wirkkala.

Modern puukkos like Jelio's are superb, and I'd love to have one, but the traditional 19th century ones exude history.

Beautiful puuko all.

Took me a while to find the two wood sheath puukko in my meager grouping.

This is a relatively small blade, carving no where as nice as on Robins. I've seen a few of these over the years, I suspect relatively modern.

The blades are signed Iisakki Jarvenpaa, but I think remounted - carving not as detailed as Robin's, never found the name to go with the initials written on back of sheath. Any help with carver's name appreciated.
Rich

Edit-
I recall seeing another similar with bear motif, but blades by Lahdensuo. Post war folk art for tourists is suspect.

I recently acquired this double Kauhava made Puukko, I'm currently restoring it - both blades were covered in iron oxide (rust) and the leather scabbard was in a mess - most problems with it are now sorted. I have been trying to identify the maker, I have been in contact with the Iisakki Järvenpää company - their response was that they did not make it. There appears to be a partial signature in the fuller - once I have cleaned it a bit more then hopefully I will be able to figure out who made it.

Kidding of course. Glad you were inspired to post and share these. Good luck with your restoration and research.

That set has great potential. Let us know (maybe see) the sig in the fuller, some one will hopefully i.d. it for us.

Arathol kind Sir  here is the Thread that I started in Bernard's Forum - everyone was extremely helpful and I got some good information there with the inscriptions on the Blade.......

OK, thats what I was looking for. Its marked "Erikoisvuolu", Special Carver, a heavy duty knife.
Probably dates from the 1930s at the earliest. This exact model appears in catalogs from that time with a couple different sheath options.
This is what it looked like with the sheath from the 1930s-

Rich,

The below pictures show the writing on the larger blade, I can read "Made in Finland" on the main part of the blade, also I can read part of it on the right hand side of the fuller - "Kauhava", there also appears to be something written on the left hand side of the fuller - as yet I can't get a clear image of it - hopefully later today after a little more work on the blade I'll be able to get an image of it.

Cheers,

Mike
