The Road to Patina

How did this go from a patina thread to a thread about pickle park escapades ????? I thought I was in the W&C forum for a while....

I do like the pics with various stages of patina.. I've gotten to the point that a knife doesn't look finished if it doesn't have at least some patina.

Is there a place in the states where the Kniessler knives are available?

No, sorry Sir. :mad::D

Mr. Kneissler runs a small store for household wares, pocket knives such as SAK`s and the like. Besides that from time to time he makes some of these "Farmers knives" (single blades and multiblades) just as kind of service for the farmers and his local customers and for some local markets and fairs he frequents.
He has no website (don`t think he owns a PC at all :D )
That was just kind of insider tip given on german messerforum (knifeforums) some years ago.

I did organize a group buy at britishblades some time ago but don`t plan to run another one.

If there`s some interest in these knives I could possibly get hold of some (4 or 5) but do NOT plan to run another group buy, sorry!
That`s NOT intended as kind of sales thread!!! And NO, I`m not related or affinitied to Mr. Kneissler and do NOT get any commission! ;):D

Here is a Vintage Schrade that i picked up yesterday at the Eugene Oregon Knife collectors show.
Looks brand spanking new except for the patina starting to develop.

What a beauty Rick !

ferric chloride is used in homemade explosives. This is why most stores like radio shack don't have it in their inventory anymore, and only deliver it on order. Just FYI

Thats a beauty.. How was the show? I didn't get a chance to go over to the valley for it this year.

338375 - The show was OK. Not a lot of booths. IMHO, not worth the trip over the mountains from Bend unless you had other business. For me, something fun to pass some time on a very cold winter day.

Now with that said, i did manage to find a nice little gem for myself.:)

The April show should be well worth the trip - maybe see you there!!

When I got this Bearhead it was in need of a good scrubbing. Insides of the backsprings and bolsters were pretty cruddy. Blades has a combination of patina and surface rust. I scrubbed them off and etched them with FeCl and then sanded with 400 grit wet/dry. Only a little bit of the old patina was left so I gave it the old overnight potato trick.

Here is a picture of a Scagel style folder, that I picked up at the P.O. today
The liners are.060" titanium, the blade is forged 52100,the spring is made of a medium carbon alloy,a steel that Ray Kirk uses in making his damascus.
It is razor sharp, and the hole in the blade is really nice for pinching this 4" folders blade, when opening it.Nice utility knife,IMO,with the natural grippy canvas micart scales.Next time you see it,it might not be so shiny.
