I just got caught up on your thread, Lyle. I am loving every thing I see!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for looking my friends.

Here is something I have come across in my searches. I don't know their origin, but they are oddities for sure.

Why would anyone want to fake these or assemble parts ? :friendly_wink::)
This is one I have had possession of,but could not come to terms with,he thought it was worth about 10 times what I did.

Remington R4633 [the correct numbers for Remington's patterns are 3853(bone), R3855 (ivory cell), R3858(cocobolo) ]

The frame seems correct, the bone incorrect.

I don't know if this blade was ever a pruner?? It has a Remington etch ??

Wrong number, should be R3853 ,if right.

Shield doesn't appear factory installed.

I have seen three of these fakes, parts knives, whatever they are. The first one was being sold for repair and the seller ,whoever, said they thought the primary blade was changed and that it had no snap. The third one,I am still negotiating. The owner knows it is not right,so I'm hopeful of procuring it for curiosity's sake. These other two were both marked R4611s ,if memory serves me correctly. All the frames seemed correct and to me the Remington marks seemed ok?

Three of them??? I hope we get some conversation about this knife I posted. Thanks for participating.

It is a great collection!

And::eek: There is nothing correct about that last knife!! From Dr. Frankenstein's La-bore'-atory, I'd say!:D

Here's the brother to the previous knife. The bone and frame seem right, marks too, except for the R4633 stamp. This is number two,and I have seen number three like these on the auction site, wonder if there are more?

Again this pattern is supposed to be marked R3853. This one has the spey blade altered at the tip on the spline.

Here it is compared to a correct Remington farmers jack. The correct one is on the top.

Correct knife on the left.

Southington c1867-1905 . Looks like someone before me tried to darken the covers with a torch.:grumpy:. I also see a great resemblance to the old Schrade peach seed and Ulster jigging.

I like that Southington, Lyle, despite its misadventure by torch!
I know that Case has darkened bone handles using their "stag-torching" apparatus. Unless it is stag that was torched?? Either way, I wonder if someone could make an art of it?
Are those handles Stag or Bone? Can you tell?

So that's what this used to be called.....

No, that is carved Stag-Bone, and dyed.
When they burned the bone, it was dark on the high points and ridges, not the low grooves, alnamvet.

Aln,
It's what's called a Wharncliffe frame by most. Your knife seems to be a Case 55 pattern,I think, which is a 3 blade Wharncliffe frame whittler, with a straight edged "wharncliffe"(your knife has the blade also called wharncliffe) blade as the primary,as opposed to the curved pruner blades on the farmer jacks..

A farmers jack is in a similar frame, but has a single spring (almost always),using a pruner (hawkbill) blade as primary ;and a spey or modified spey as the secondary blade. If you look closely ,you can see the differences in the primary blades.

Thanks Charlie,I have to get the high powered lens' out and do some comparing. Short answer,I don't know, but think bone.

Yes, I see the differences in blade types, but the actual pattern/frame are almost the same.

Yes,quite similar,it's what attracted me to this peculiar pattern. I was enamored with the Case 80 pattern whittler at my early collecting stage. First knife I ever bought to collect and not use. It has a similar so-called serpentine, dogleg,or Wharncliffe frame.

Thanks for looking Aln,hope I haven't been too confusing.:)

Lyle: Do you have any hole or well shots of these style knives? I know that there are different ways to accomplish the bypassing of the blades by changing plunge lines, offsetting plunge lines, etc. but pictures work better for me than explanations. Eh? How are your Blade plans coming??

John
