The rubber glovers

Don't they use white cotton gloves in museums and ritzy auction houses? My hands are usually clean enough to require neither!

Yeah, the guys at the National Firearms Museum use white cotton gloves to protect the guns from the salts and acids in fingerprints that attract moisture and cause rust.

I have been guilty of wearing rubber gloves when making videos for potential sales of high end knives. When I'm showing someone the condition of an object they're interested in purchasing for a large sum of money, I try to represent it as accurately as possible. That means wiping gunk off the blade, cleaning the handles (especially if anodized titanium), and maybe giving the blade a light coat of oil. I then stuck on some rubbers, mostly because they were around and in the house, to prevent my handling of the knife from leaving fingerprints or oils that may distort the colors in a picture/video.

I don't keep rubber gloves handy just for this purpose and if I don't have any around I clean the knife up then wash my hands before handling it again. I see lots of sales listings where people mention that the blade has tape gunk/cheeto dust/boogers on it, and I just can't feel good selling something to someone without tidying it up first and making it look nice. You'd probably wash a truck before listing it for sale, right? Then maybe not get back in it if your boots were covered in mud? Doesn't mean it has never been dirty or done work, you're just trying to present the best version of it to a potential buyer. I think of knives the same way.

I'll jump in on this....
I wear rubber gloves to handle my traditional knives and there's a reason.
Many years ago I was heavy on buying and more than once I would find a Colonial, Case or many other brands out at Flea markets with fingerprint ridges rusted onto the blade or rubbed into the patina. Since then it's been gloves only on my traditional that I don't carry. Most knives these days don't have just carbon steel blades, so you don't have that problem.
And as someone who has purchased a pristine traditional knife from you in the past, I say thanks for the consideration.

I always find it amusing when I see knife listings with pictures of rubber gloves on while holding the knife. I just find it ridiculous. Seems like more of a schtick to imply the knife being sold is some precious gem worth way more than the asking price. I could understand if it’s knife jewelry with gold and gems worth tens of thousands but that’s usually not the case.

Am I supposed to believe the knife has only been handled with rubber gloves. And if so what a terrible way to have to handle your precious! Couldn’t imagine putting on glove’s just to finger fondle one of my knives. But I guess some always practice safe fondling! 😂

I’ve done a lot of nerdy knife things as I’ve gone down the rabbit hole. But if I’m ever caught wearing rubber gloves in a knife listing or anywhere really, Blues Blues please take me out of my misery and immediately ban me.

Thanks

Have you never considered that some people might not want to post pictures of their hands?

I have not and I’m sure that may be the case for some but I think the majority are trying to imply the knife’s value.

There’s no need to post pictures holding the knife anyway if you have frankenstein hands. Now in a video I understand.

And just to reiterate I get it may be necessary for high dollar knives or even with certain materials. But a ti frame lock, meh.

Yeah I'm sure that there a some people who are handling the knife with gloves to protect it or imply that it is more valuable, but I also know that there are in fact legitimate reasons to avoid showing your hands.

I remember maybe ten years ago reading about a software that was being used to scan pictures to look for fingerprints that were on the camera lens when the picture was taken. The prints are faint and aren't normally noticeable, but the software could still detect them. Just knowing something like that exists is creepy enough. These days with AI it must be even more advanced. That's why I will never post pictures online with my bare hands, and if I share a photo I am going to wipe the lens before I take the picture. I don't want pictures of my fingerprints being out there. Once it's out there, it's out there and you never know what somebody might do with it later. Technology keeps moving forward.

I know most people never even think about this but maybe they should. Then again, everybody carries a GPS tracking device with a microphone and cameras on them at all times and they hardly give it a second thought. People put all kinds of apps on it and don't even read what kinds of data is being collected. I'm the type who always puts a piece of tape over the camera on my laptop, and I make sure that the cameras on my phone are covered too, until I want to use them.

I consider fingerprints to be private, personal information, and I don't want to share mine on the internet. I know that others feel this way, and some will even refuse to post videos with them speaking. With the AI technology being able to copy someone's voice and make it say whatever you want, it's not unreasonable to avoid posting clips of yourself talking.

Uh…ok. I suppose but I don’t think the majority wearing gloves in knife pics are doing so to hide their finger prints but I’ve been wrong, well always according to the Mrs!

What the...

We're moving seriously beyond GKD here fellas...conspiracy theories notwithstanding.

I think this'll be wrapping up fairly shortly.

I never worry much about getting old sickly abrasive acid covered stain and rust promoting finger prints on my knifes or guns for that matter ~ I have been a mechanic all my life and oil has been absorbed into my skin so deep anything I touch leaves a lasting Shine

I see this little trick on gun auctions all the time as well.. You know those auctions where they think having the original hang tag and box adds $8,000 to the price for some reason.

They watched too much metal complex. He does it because of them not being his and I guess the sellers are trying to instill the same, that it's not there's its yours
Any mental complex is too much. That guy is awful. I dont mind it either way. They are trying to keep fingerprints off it, id imagine (im assuming youre talking second hamd listings). I sure dont do it either, but i get it.
