Thx. Gp35

I've found that knives from Taiwan, especially over the past couple of years, are very, very good.

Much better than the knives I've seen from mainland China.
No comparison.

Most recently, I picked up a couple of Blade-Tech Lite knives designed by Tim Wegner and made in Taiwan.

The fit, finish, and edge are all top notch.

Yup, I have friends here who are full time pro. knife makers and their knives are of excellent quality.

When Taiwan or china is mentioned people instantly think of giant factories churning out piles and piles of low quality goods. They cant seem to comprehend that there is small set ups producing high quality goods all over the world, not just the US.

I know some of you might find it hard to believe but they even have running water and electricity over here :rolleyes:

Taiwan also have the tallest building in the world (Taipei 101) and a high speed rail road (something the US should have...). The computer you are using right now most probably have components that are made in Taiwan

back to topic: hmmm... I decided I will pick one up, but I don't have enough money right now! :(

I don't understand why everyone's so down on Taiwan. Yes, it stinks that it's not made in the U.S., but that doesn't seem to bother anyone when they buy Made in Japan products. Taiwan's capable of producing quality products (plus it still has to get through Spyderco's QA/QC). Plus, Taiwan's our little democratic buddy staring down the barrels of countless SKS's

Now I have a big decision to make: Sage or Caly3.

Will the scale materials, colors, etc. vary from variant to variant?

LOL countless barrels of SKS's aahahaha I like your humor but seriously lets back to the 21st century and topic at hand shall we?

Sage is one sweet looking knife but just Sal can produce more knives from the Golden factory. The quality is top notch and I don't mind paying a little extra money.

My Sage arrived today. I was a little leery of the "made in Taiwan", but my fears were for naught. This knife is built to the standards of my other Spydies. Feels good in the hand and I really like CF.

Nice Carbon Fiber handles
Black wire pocketclip (for those who want be stealthy)
Steel liners
Torx screw construction
Walker Linerlock (mine locks up solid too)
Quality spacers
Blade is tight (no play)
Finger choil is jimped to match thumb ramp
Flat ground leaf style blade
Excellent size

Only dislike.... no hole for a lanyard.

If you're on the fence about the Sage, get off! Order yourself one right now, you'll be glad you did. :D

Warning: Pic Heavy

Very, very nice pictures. Aesthetically and QC wise, I'm sold. Now, how's the performace? Slicing wise? As for penetration, if it's not too much bother, would you mind stabbing it into a roll of paper towels to test how far it goes in (1/4, 1/3. 1/2, all the way in?) Recently, I've been testing all my knives in this fashion, and the results have been quite suprising.

Thanks,
Mark

Great looking knife.

China =evil totalitarian regime that runs over protestors with tanks ,commits genocide in
Darfur for oil sent 3 million rounds of ammo to Mugabe in Zimbabwe in case anyone contests the election.

Taiwan = nice little democracy with very interesting parliamentary proceedings/riots that china is always threatening to bomb into the stone age if they don't let China own them.

Taiwan and korea both make some nice quality stuff.

Spyderco must have seen some impressive stuff in Taiwan to send a bunch of expensive S30V there after the Germany incident.

whoaa thanks for the awesome pix pkdmslf  i believe you just "pushed me over the edge" to get a Sage ;)

Yeah, thanks pkdmslf.. I also was on the fence regarding the Sage. Not because it didn't appeal to me (cuz it has since day 1) but because I've recently purchased two UKPK's (one black/one FG), one G-10 Caly3 and have a FG Paramilitary on the way! I was TRYING to hold off on ordering the Sage (to save up first) but your beautiful, clear photos did me in and before I knew it, my order had been placed. Oh well, at least I'll have some worth every penny, beautiful knives to open up the credit card bills with! SPYDERCO so-o-o-o-o-o-o adds to the quality of life!

Great pic's PKDMSLF. Thanks for your post and pic's.

I'd really love to see pics and hear how this stacks up to the CF Caly III.

A lot of the specs look similar.

3" blade
high-end blade steel
flat grind
cf scales (though it sounds like the texture is different)
steel skeletonized liners
wire clip (yeah!!)

Minor differences between the CF Caly III and the CF Sage seem to be:
ZDP laminate vs s30V
solid back spacer, vs. no back spacer
rivets vs. screw construction
natural metal vs. black painted wire clip
No washers. vs. no bronze washers

What is the difference in handle length?
Smoothness of action? Anything else?

Taiwan no thanks.

You're deeply mistaken. This knife is not sub par just because it's made in Taiwan. I got mine today and if it didn't have the Taiwan stamp on the blade, I'd think it was made in Golden. I find absolutely not faults or shortcuts with the Sage. It opens and closes smoothly. The Spydie hole is cut with enough bite on the edge to easily flick the blade open just like the Golden Spydercos.

Sal is no dummy. He did his homework and found a knife maker who can build a knife to Spyderco's strict standards. Once I saw the knife, I was very pleased. It's a keeper. In fact, I'm picking up a few more. Taiwan or not, the Sage sits right there with the Golden knives. Check one out. You'll be surprised.

I normally don't care about taiwan stamps until I got a boker hyper. The taiwan stamp is near the tang such that it is only visible as the knife is being open, so it can't be seen when in the fully open and closed position. I think more manufacturers should take advantage of that spot. That being said, however, I've got a sage on the way!

Why don't you people like having China or Taiwan stamped on the blade? Regardless of whether it's there or not, that's where it was made, and if it's a good enough knife for you to own and carry, why should it bother you? I'm proud to own knives from China and Taiwan that completely destroy the notion of those countries being incapable of making quality cutlery.
