Phil Lobred's San Diego ART KNIFE INVITATIONAL 2011 will take
place during the coming weekend!

What a treat this will be with 25 world famous custom knifemakers
bringing with them the best of their best - all new knives - made specially
for this prestigious event.

This year Jim Merritt will be a guest at the show and will bring
with him 3-4 of Bob Loveless' personal knives for sale!

Well worth the more that 8,000 mile trip.

I know of two Forumites that will be present, Steven of course, and for
his first knife show ever Lorien Arnold who may be doing an article on
the show for BLADE Magazine...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I hope to see LOTS of pictures!

It can't possibly be ANYTHING but an AMAZING show!

If at all possible, I would REALLY appreciate getting a catalog. :D

Had planned on atttending, however will miss it again.
Sure all will have a wonderful time.

Seems Steven would be the logical choice for author of an AKI article considering his long time relationships the promoter, with many of the makers, knowledge of the knives, shows in general and inter workings of this particular show.
Lorien, sure you will do a good job and will look forward to article, just surprised.
Anyway, we will enjoy Steven's review here as usual, I hope.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Kevin.

I've never been asked by a publication for an article on the AKI. Have been fortunate over the years to develop close relationships with 8 of the 25 AKI makers, and casual interaction with another 7....a privilege to be sure. The very best part of the AKI for me is always being able to hang out with Phil and Judy Lobred and their family. It's very hard to explain....Sometimes, Phil is like a brother to me, and sometimes like a father....but he is, if nothing else, a very good friend.

Lorien will experience a show unlike any other show, an absolutely fantastic opportunity, and if he can do a credible job of translating that experience into well written commentary, more's the better. The time may or may not present itself for some degree of interaction...you never know what is going to happen at the AKI.

See some of you there!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

This will be my first AKI and to say I am excited would be an understatement. I will look forward to seeing you all there.it will be fun seeing old friends and I hope to make some new ones as well. Everyone travel safe!

I've learned there has been a shift from the photographer (Eric Eggly) this year. A book in the works?

Can someone explain what's happening in this regard? A few of my clients made reference as if I knew. I know nothing more.

Lorien and STeven: Good stuff.

A book about the 2011 AKI, its knifeartists and their knives
will be published early next year. It will be a very limited edition...

All the best,

Here are some more details about the AKI 2011 limited
edition of 300 copies book.

It will be 180-200 pages and among other information will display
all of the knives made for the 2011 show, in a high quality printing.

The price is US$190 including shipping.

Early subscriptions will determine its being published.

For orders contact: theakibook2011@gmail.com

I myself am not involved in this project in any way...

All he best,
David Darom (ddd)

Thanks for clarifying this, David.

I learned via email, the photographer and potential publisher is Francesco Pachi, for those who don't know already.

I'd love to see the Loveless', especially if they are older pieces.

Any other changes of makers for 2011?

Wish I could be there - would love to meet Phil and hang with my forum buds - and see some of the best knives on the planet.

I am looking forward to being there. Traveling all the way across the country for it, but of course some are coming from a lot farther away than that (right, David?).

And of course, I hope I will be able to bring home a memento (or two). :D

You are right there - for me it is 19 hours in the air and 5-6 at airports
for just one day of ultimate knife candy....

I am certain it will be a sensational show. Looking forward to STeven's reportage!

Wow! That is some dedication!

I am flying out tomorrow AM. A simple 5 1/2 hour nonstop flight for me.

Still . . . that is longer on the plane than the show itself.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone brings to the table. :)

I remember watching a short video online that was made several years ago at the 2005 AKI where Steven interviewed Bob Loveless. It would be nice to see some photos or even video for this year too.

Have a good show everyone!

It's been six hours since the show's close. Everyone is having dinner now in balmy San Diego.

Me? I have 4" of wet snow in CT and I'm sequestered inside.

Wanting to know more. :D
