The San Diego ART KNIFE INVITATIONAL coming up!

Just got this picture from Eric of PointSeven. It is C Gray Taylor's
Georgian Era Style 15-Blade Horseman's Knife.

This was C Gray's BID UP knife, beginning at $30,000...

It is this magnificent folder the won C. Gray the Buster Warenski
Award at the Show...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

If anyone has the photos of Virgil Englands knives I would love to see them, I've already seen Loriens closeups.

I have not seen any, Serge, but collectors who purchased
some of his knives may have had them photographed
after the show.

Lets wait and see....

All the best,

To complete this Thread that mostly displayed Francesco Pachi's
amazing photography of 35 of the AKI 2011 knives (Thanks Francesco!!!),
here are some snapshots I took of the Show itself...

First a general view of the fully packed AKI 2011 showroom
at the San Diego Sheraton Hotel.
The large windows face the sunlit Marina which is only
a couple of meters away!

Note: The non stop buffet was amazing too...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

The tables with the knives and their respective drop-boxes
behind them, were arranged along the large windows with
the sunlit view of the Marina serving as a beautiful background
for the knifemakers.

Closest to the camera is John W. Smith (always with a smile on his face),
further down (sitting) is Steven Rapp, then Jim Merritt and
then, the tall guy standing further down, is Wolfgang Loerchner.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I like that John Smith fellow

INTENT TO PURCHASE...

A collector is dropping her "Intent to Purchase" slip
into the box belonging to one specific knife...

All the best,

drf1, photographers aside, Dan, I think that you will especially like
one of these amazing state-of-the art AKI 2011 Michael Walker folders.... :)

All the best,

Please forgive me. I'd like to chime in regarding the image quality.

These images are clearly not showing the knife in it's best light.

#1 it is not sharp, not out of focus exactly, but more like overprocessed. Nothing in the images is crisp.
#2 there is a clearly seen graininess around every knife, I am not pixel peeping just using my own eyes to see this.
#3 the knife seems to not have a edge bevel. Perhaps the maker did not sharpen the blade, but I doubt it. If the photographer chose to

For clear example of my thoughts; take the top image then compare the blade steel in the middle vignette to the bottom one. The image quality is clearly not consistent.

Coop indicates Pachi is top tier. He is a terrific filter for this type of knowledge. I'll accept that. But these images do not do these knives justice. Perhaps Coop will have the opportunity to photograph at least one of these amazing Welker knives. Then we'll have the opportunity to see what the knife really looks like.

Shotgunner,

I do not want to offend you in any way but there are many reasons for
your seeing what you indicated - but none of them have any connection
whatsoever with the quality of Francesco's original images that are of
amazing quality and resolution...

• The pictures that were posted here are very low resolution images.
• Low-res images may appear grainy on a low resolution screen.
Etc., etc....

I'll stop here, because your "observations" were so totally
amateurish that it will be too complicated to convince you...

I really do not understand where you came from and what caused this
strange outburst... This is very - I can't even categorize it...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Nice way to condescend, David.

You must have been taking notes!

Getting back to the 2011 AKI Show, if I may, here is the
moment of truth everyone present was waiting for:
The OPENING OF THE BOXES.

With all the excitement I somehow managed to capture
Dr. Fred Carter dipping into one of his boxes to randomly
pick the winning slip for the knife that this box represents...

A "Moment of truth" for one lucky collector!

Notice the beautiful view of the Marina in the
background, just outside the windows.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

While the Showroom was at the rear of the hotel,
facing the beautiful Marina, the front of the Sheraton
faced the open Pacific Ocean. What a setting...

Here is the view from a 5th floor balcony.
The view from higher up was spectacular!

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
