The San Diego ART KNIFE INVITATIONAL coming up!

my only regret from the show was not having met more forumites.
it was an amazing experience which I will not ever forget.

OUCH!!!!! The scary part is that the first thing that I thought of was that if it didn't go all the way through, it must not have been that bad by knife nut standards.. Hope you heal up quickly.
Ha Ha,

So I am briskly walking through the AKI show room with a napkin balled up in my left hand, clenched so as to form a pressure bandage, careful not to spill my drink in the right hand, looking for a gift shop in the hotel lobby, to purchase crazy glue, and Matt Diskin is already there, and has purchased it for me. Blot the area dry, and liberally apply crazy glue.....the exothermic reaction is uhhhh.... invigorating.

Luckily, this cut missed any tendons or other vital bits, there is some soreness in the fingers, but nothing major.

It really doesn't hurt much, but is going to make work difficult for a few days(I work as a fishmonger at Whole Foods Market) and is going leave a heck of a scar. I was corking the tip of the Knight as is my custom, we were banging up from the show 'n sell, about 4:30 pm or so. The amount of pressure it took for the knife to go through the cork into my hand was maybe 5 lbs. I LOVE this knife(it was the only piece I had on display not for sale)!

Thanks for the concern everybody....I'll try to get the writeup done within the next few days.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Glad it wasn't any worse STeven, and I am looking forward to your writeup.

Roger

Steven, it was good to meet you and share a laugh. Glad you stabbed your left hand as it left your right fit for shaking.

I was a few feet away when it all went down, heard the commotion, looked over and saw Steven looking at a puddle of blood in his hand. Hell, I woulda paid that for his Hayes, but I figured he was only taking cash. When I found out it was his, I immediately, subconciously knew that his Knight was the perp. I'd just handled that knife and had to put it down, it just felt too damn dangerous. Jason Knight once told me he'd take a bullet for Steven, so I'm not sure what to think about all this.

Steven, you gave me the best compliment I ever received. It was great meeting you, I hope to see you at Blade in the summer.

Yes, indeed, the 2011 AKI was a spectacular show and an
amazing success as I am sure you will all hear from Steven.

So, to add some knife art in color to this thread,
here first are two of Julie Warenski-Erickson's
pieces that she brought to the show, where all
the work was done by her
:

On the left:
"Ornate Persian Fighter", with a blade made from
Rob Thomas' Stainless Herringbone pattern Damascus.

On the right:
"Presentation Dagger", with a blade ground from
Rob Thomas' Stainless Firestone pattern Damascus.

For various reasons, (regretfully, I have to add) most of the 2011 AKI
knives were not photographed professionally. Luckily, I got some
of them photographed for use in several future books of mine.

All thee best,
David Darom (ddd)

As to the beautiful AKI 2011 Catalog, bear in mind
that some of the knives displayed to represent various makers
in their sections were pictures of 2009 AKI knives.

Also in the "News" section: Making of the planned AKI 2011 book that
I mentioned earlier on this thread has been postponed to 2013.
All checks sent in to the book's committee will be returned...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Here is the 3rd of 6 amazing knives displayed on Julie and Curt's table:

"Exquisite"
A large dagger with a blade ground and pierced from Rob Thomas Reptilian
pattern Stainless Damascus and a hot blued steel insert deeply carved and
inlayed with gold. The handle is crafted from a very rare black and white
premium dendrite agata gem stone. Embellishing is platinum, gold and
German silver with white diamonds, and large black diamonds.
All the work was done by Julie.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Although I'm a real dagger nut for some reason or other out of these three beautiful knives that Persian Fighter appeals to me the most.

I had posted earlier in this threaad that I would love to get a catalog if possible. Contact is currently limited, as I live in CT where the storm has left me without power, internet , etc. Using a computer at the community shelter! Hope to get power as estimated on 11/6.

Peter

Peter, I grabbed one for you. Shoot me your address and I'll send it your way.
Good luck with the weather!

although I have a bunch of photos for a thread I'll be putting together when the time is right, I was sent these two pictures with a request to post them here.

I regard Wolfgang Loerchner as one of a tiny handful of knife makers in the world who operates completely independently in his own, ('style' is not the right word) maybe 'on' his own is a better way to put it. The fact that there are others who emulate what he's introduced to the world says volumes about his impact on the world of custom knives.

Wolfgang is a very down to earth, quiet spoken, original and engaging man, who is an exceptional artist and whose knives really are knives.

Anyway, here are a couple of photos for your viewing pleasure, I was fortunate enough to actually be able to hold these knives in my hand, an can attest to their 'feel' and their mechanical perfection. Truly an honor to behold such high art in such an intimate setting.

Thank you, Phil Lobred, for bringing more life to custom knives!

As I mentioned earlier on this Thread, most of the AKI 2011 knives
were not photographed professionally.
Luckily, I had some knives photographed earlier by Eric Eggly for forthcoming
books... Among these were knives engraved or made & engraved by Julie.

So, here is one more from the table of Julie Warenski and Curt Erickson.
Made by Curt and carved/engraved/inlaid by Julie.

Every inch on this knife sings out its beauty....

Julie and Curt's San Francisco knife is perhaps to most beautiful SF style knife I have yet to see. No secret I love all they do.

But the very first 2011 AKI knife I saw was on the front of the AKI invitation - Wolfgang Loerchner's magnificent Dolphin folder. I think it's really something very special.

Especially the handle on that SF knife is amazing and innovative. It has a real 3D look and feel. I'm sure the owner is very proud to own this, I know I would.

Here is one more of the amazing knives that were
displayed on Julie and Curt's table at the AKI,
a Classic Art Dagger...
Made By Curt Erickson and carved, engraved and inlaid
by Julie Warenski.
