We are in luck! Francesco Pachì began sending me pictures
of the few knives that he did get to photograph at the AKI!!!

He is now busy setting them up like only he can do, and I
shall post them here.

To begin with, here are two of Harvey Dean's knives.
I am sure that they will appeal to many on this Forum... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

This is Harvey Dean's "Vintage Bowie"

And this is his "Four-Bladed Elephant's Toenail Folder"...

Here are two folders that really fascinated me. Wonder knives from Ron Appleton.
An Infini-locking folder and an IQ folder.

All the best,

I find Pachi's work repetitive and uninspired, although the photos of the knives as images, not taking the background into account, are certainly adequate.....I do think he is not in the same league as Cooper, Eggly or Thomason....this is said as one who has patronized the US-based photographers mentioned....these are just not good knife pictures comparatively, imo....it's a big step down....and....uh, David....I would HAPPILY say this to Pachi's face.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I agree. The photos don't really bother me but I would like to see the opposite sides of the knives aswell like the other guys show them. If it were a photo of a knife I own, id be more interested in the knife then the background. Beautiful knives though. I love Tims bowie, the fancy hunter and the Dean sunfish trapper kills me!

Steven, I have no problems with what you said, BUT I think that
if you look carefully at the knives themselves you will see that
lighting-wise they are probably the best among active knife
photographers of today.

Every photographer and his background style. Francesco has created
a presentation style that caters to what European collectors are used
to seeing, and they like his modernized "old school" display.
He is considered a commercial photographer of the highest level in
Europe today, just as Eric Eggly is so known in the USA.

When using Francesco's images to set up the pages in my books, I
can tell the differences between various photographers. Just look
how alive the blade steel is on Ron Appleton's knives, something that
is very difficult to achieve....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

I do not have the technical photographic expertise to effectively critique the artists referred to, but aesthetically speaking, I would agree with STeven. I also prefer the images of others to what I have seen recently from Francesco Pachi, but I have seen great work from him previously. He made some superb knives as well.

DDD would rank amongst my favorites as well.

That being said, I welcome the opportunity to see any and ALL images from the AKI.

After making the comments above in reference to the photos in THIS thread, I would like to add that Francesco's photos in the "professional photo thread" Lorien started, are MUCH more to my liking.

Thanks Peter.

One thing is sure Peter, and that is that the knives themselves
are beautifully photographed.
The other thing is that this is probably the only option we have
to see a few of the 2011 AKI knives at this stage...

All the best,

Here are two of Ron Lake's AKI 2011 Folders...

Sad(to me) fact that is undeniable! I sincerely thank you for the photograph posting, David, you do us all a great service.

The fawning in this thread for the photographer rankles me to a certain extent because there is an agenda(not in DDD's case, but certainly in others), unlike previous AKI's where it was simply a matter of posting photos.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

STeven, I might be dimwitted in this instance, but could you please explain? On or off forum I don't mind either way, I just want to understand this. Thanks,

Marcel
