The Shovel Discussion Thread!

LOL no problem! I just like sharing cool stuff! :D

It was a pleasure dealing with Predator Tools. The box arrived today and lo and behold inside was not only the best damn shovels I've ever seen but a free American Flag! Brought a tear to my eye really. It's out there now, in our little neighborhood overlooking Pearl Harbor, illuminated per code. Thank you FortyTwoBlades, and, Thank You Mr. George Lesche.

Now some pics! I couldn't resist respraying with earth tones and wrapping the handles :)

Aw--how cute! Shame about the rear-turned steps but at its small size I doubt it would matter TOO much. :)

PT, which two are those?

Frickin' sweet, dude! Aren't they amazing? :D:thumbup:

YES. Ok so I figure go up the hill to take some pics and water the plants. Next thing you know I'm up there over an hour working with the new Model 35 shovel lol! Love it, cuts my labor in half literally. Again - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

makes quick work dispatching over the invasive weed grass clumps. took the smaller 35 out to work on the incline, very handy size. built like a tank no worries about using it like a pry bar, no bending or complaints when striking buried rocks. little pigs dared not return to the scene of the crime or there'd be another test :p

new papaya trees in the ground, won't be long before reaching to the sky and bearing fruits. this is one of 5 new plantings.

That's a nice little shovel. And at that size the turn of the steps isn't so important. Most important things are decent steel and a good solid attachment to the handle.

Heck--at that size the attachment doesn't usually even have to be much special. A simple open backed socket and single rivet get the job done just dandy. For me the step orientation is mostly a pet peeve at that size range. :D

So, my mom does a good bit of digging around in her yard, and I never have any idea of what to get for her as a gift, so I'm thinking about maybe buying a shovel for her for Mother's Day. (I know, I know, how very loving, eh?) Anyway, I'm on the Predator Tools site, and although they have good pictures of the tools individually, there's nothing like a "group photo" to give a good idea of the relative sizes of the various shovels in the line. What would be a good general-purpose shovel for someone doing yardwork/gardening? Mom's about 5'1" and not terribly burly... I was thinking about maybe the new Piranha (Model 35) like Papa Tango has, or maybe the Little Eagle.

Suggestions from people familiar with the line?

Also, while I've perhaps got your attention, has anyone approached Predator Tools about designing a "bushcrafty" kind of shovel specifically?

Thanks!
Fox

The 58 Little Eagle, 59 Relic Pro, or 88 Hercules would all be good options for garden work. The 300 Big Red is great as a general yardwork shovel, especially with the optional serrated edge.

I have a few designs for a "bushcraft" shovel that I'll be running by George soon. ;)

Thanks for the advice, 42B. I can't help but notice that all the shovels you recommended are on the short side... I had been picturing something around the 40" length as a "mid-size" shovel, but I always let my ex-wife do the gardening, so I really don't know what's best for that kind of work. Did you recommend the shorter shovels because of my mother's vertically-challenged nature? :)

I suggested the shorter ones because of the way you can drop your weight down onto them, as well as use them when kneeling. Both of these qualities make them very well suited to gardening work. :)

Forget buying her a shovel. Go work in her garden with her shovel and tell her how nice it is. Plant a lilac or some other flowering shrub that she loves. She'll appreciate it more.

Well I sent off the rough concept sketches of mine to George today. I'll be interested in seeing what he thinks.

Sweet! I had a conversation with a colleague about a backcountry shovel today when I showed him the Little Eagle I ordered for my mom. I'll be interested to see the results of this. Care to give us an idea of what you're thinking?
