The Silver Lining: A Stainless Traditional Showcase

Nice that a Rust-Free Zone thread has been set up :D I'm keen on stainless and carbon too, depends on the knife, the use and the whim . Patina can look attractive but it has to be maintained and sometimes it can just look a messy business. Rust never sleeps remember...."Every time it rains , it rains patina from heaven " ;)

Here's one of my rust-resistors, from Japan and Mr Ohta a very fine gent too.

So where do we stand on D2? Is it stainless enough to be included? It seems to sit in a middle ground.

Thoughts?

No idea if it is considered "stainless".
I only know I have not had any success getting a patina started on my (offshore) Marbles D2 sowbelly stockman ... despite giving the blades a 15 minute vinegar soak in an attempt to start a patina.

I'm not 100% sure I heard quiet laughter coming from the cup while it was soaking ... it was probably my immagination ... right? 🤔😐

IIRC it not considered stainless due to not enough chromium content. Its a corrosion resistant tool steel, but technically not stainless. I have a Canal Street Pinch with D2 that has patina. I bought it second hand, so I don't know how it happened. The knife had been rode hard and put away wet by its previous owner.

That said, I have no opinion about including D2 in this thread. I leave that to the originator and/or the collective 🤖

Sounds good. We can dance in the grey if there’s no opposition. I haven’t been able to get a patina on D2 (even with quite a bit of food prep), but I’ve seen rust spots start when in my pocket during the summer. I guess technically it “stains less” 😁

I've not found the D2 used by Queen Cutlery to be stainless, here's a liner-lock quite grey. Odd thing is, that unlike carbon, the 'patina' on D2 won't get removed by metal polish. You may have to use abrasive steel wool or papers. I have a Queen D2 Whittler in Bone and the master blade has an ugly grey patch across it that won't shift, avoid citrus fruits seems to be the answer.

An early GEC from 2008 in Horsecut Bone. Never understood why they put the squirrels&acorns etched side of the blade on the 'pile' side, but the Cyclops Steel Works tang stamp is a great stamp, too bad it vanished.

That’s a nice one! What’s the show side look like?

Rescued this stainless blade off a broken knife and put it into a new handle. Don’t worry, the blade it replaced also went to good use.

Always fun to bring new life to good parts. I think the project still embodies the spirit of a “Navy Knife” as well… or at least that’s what I was going for ⚓

How I bought it.
