The Simple #74 from GEC!!

I'm a sucker for a simple single bladed knife, I dont have much use for multiple blades unless im trying to whittle something. Hopefully we see some of these bad boys this year!

tell me it wasn't just a dream... gonna be some new 74s?;):)

Between the very interesting bone color and my favorite shield, I think in going to have to try to get one of these. What a gorgeous knife!
Yes, I think that some of them are going to turn out pretty "purple" towards the bolsters... that would be what I would look for, as an "ideal"... the jigging, while a little too "repetitive" for my taste is not bad looking at all. I can't wait to see them up close and personal.

Very nice gathering James! :)

Half/Stop Half/Stop Thanks Ron. They've trickled in and out over the years. Some by way of wonderful dealers and others thru the Exchange. It's been fun to be in the right place at the right time and put them together. :)

There have been several Trapper threads, including the latest buzz about the large #23 that is emerging from Titusville. But I am hoping to keep some smaller, simpler knives in view with this thread! I'd also love to see any #74s you might have!
The #74 doesn't have a swell in the center like most other Trapper-style knives. This pattern has a plain curved design, and the clip blades are relatively wide. These single-blade models ride easily in your pocket; I will have to get a two-blade to try one out!!
First have a look at this Ebony Tidioute! It is almost knife with a small K!! Simple, purposeful lines; no doubt that it's not the fancy model! But you can see right away that it will cover most tasks where a knife is required!! It is light in weight with the ebony handles and fits nicely in your pocket at a little over 3 3/4"! Big, but not too big, IMO!!

Now we have some variations. A GEC; white, naturally textured bone with a stainless drop point blade, then the Ebony, then a Yellow Rose in Northfield dress! Nice variations, but the same simple knife!! Please enjoy, and post yours for us to see!:)View attachment 1290938 View attachment 1290939 View attachment 1290940 View attachment 1290941 View attachment 1290942
Going through my knives last night thinking I just have so many that I cant decide what to use (thats even after selling a lot recently in the UK).

So I went back to my routes one of my first 2 GEC knives.

I bought this after advice when I said I preffered to pinch open, they said this one fits the bill (UK site).

The shape of the mustang with the blade low appealed more to me but I wasnt sure I could open it.

Wasnt it crazy I could just buy the knife with no fuss or bother at the retail price (bring back those days please).

I agree with you Charlie, this is all the knife you need in many ways if you want a cutter thats easy to carry.

Plus I love the satin blade and the tidioute trim is much better, who needs flash...not me.

One of my best POCKET knives, as the French knife shop woman said to me "its a pocket knife put it in your pocket" that shout be a slogan of intent.

Pictured here with his brother whose a bit of a contrary sort but is also easy to pinch open.

Nice thread, Charlie!

I think the #74 is sort of a “just right” knife. Not too big, not too small.

The no-frills ebony Tidioute really spoke to me when they ran these in 2017, and it was the only one I picked up at the time.

Here it is next to the slightly larger #43 Oregon Trapper. I really like the profile of the clip blade they used on that particular #74 run.

Last year I had a chance to pick up a second #74 (from that same 2017 run) off the exchange. It had a bit of patina on the blade, but hadn’t been sharpened, so “like new” as far as I’m concerned! :D

GEC called this one Spring Green jigged bone, and if I remember correctly, some of them were a slightly brighter green color that might fit the name, but I was really drawn to the mossy green color of this particular knife.

Here’s a close-to-mirror-image with a left-handed #73.

And, of course, I used that Ebony #74 as the basis for my Curved TC Barlow mock-up. :D

Great post and photos I agree with you.

I love that Barlow type you made it?

Great thread, Charlie.... this is my one and only 74... a Mustang. Beautifully balanced knife, love the drop point, and it's 440C steel.
I agree.... another run of these would be better than fine....
