The Sound of a Folder

Never gave it much thought until I got the Spyderco Brad Southard. Now I notice it in all my EDC knives. Authority, solid build and strength sound off when opening and closing this knife. One of the best EDC knives. IMO

To get back on topic, how do friction folders and twist locks like Opinel cut into this category, these types of knives make virtually no noise when being opened. This has to be an advantage when you don't want to draw any attention to your knife..

I also like the sound of my son's 875 Sentinel and my 975 Emerson, both Benchies have titanium liner locks. They just have a different sound to them.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a Sebenza, and that it sounds the same the first time and the millionth time.

My Kirby Lambert inferno makes a sound like no other when it locks up... thwaaaak!

I love sounds of certain knives when they lock up. Flippers also have different sounds which are great to hear. Autos are hit and miss on sounds but some like the gunhammer are really good sounding. Video never does knives justice.

You're definitely not alone Moxy. My Spyderco, Kershaw, and Benchmade blades all have a pleasant "snikt" sound when they open but nothing I've held so far compares the the solid vault-like sound of my 0560 opening.

I do enjoy the sound of a knife opening but when you fondle the G-10 that sound is really soothing to me for some reason.

I also enjoy the sound of a good framelock engaging, with the SnG being my favorite so far. It has a very noticible double click upon opening, and you know it's ready for business!

Maybe I'm alone in this, but one thing I've always been fond of with folders is the sound the make when they lock or close. There is something to that "click" sound that can't be expressed in words. In my collection the best sounding knife would have to be my Strider SNG. The solid G10 backspacer makes a cavity in between the handles that seems to acoustically amplify the click if you hold it just right as you open it. I also love how my Sebenzas "ting" when they're closed. I seem to fixate on stupid minor details, real or imagined, and come up with insane and irrational reasons to like or dislike pocket knives. :p

I'm totally on board with this and wouldn't be surprised if a lot of knife nuts are the same way.

Sort of like judging the build quality of a car by the sound the door makes when you close it.
May not be a comprehensive metric to judge but works well all the same....IMHO

They all have their own unique sound which is cool but I really love the sound of my ZT knives when they open. Such a loud "thunk" sound. I open all my one handed openers with two hands though when I'm around people as I don't like to draw attention to myself in any way, shape or form. :)

The sound of perfectly matching surfaces meeting is a measure of excellency and totally enjoyable. However, don't forget "a silent lock will live longer". Optimize a perfect lock's life expectancy by refraining from compulsively flicking (yes, I know, it's hard...). But you may benefit from life long use of a perfect locking folder. Yum...

My zt 0550 and Kershaw blur are the loudest and the most authoritative. Next to them my xm-18 sounds demure.

Exactly. I hear car manufacturers design that sound. I wonder if knife designers do that too.

For this the green g10 on the spyderco forum native 5 is the most comfortable.

What about the sound of the detent when closing the blade? I really dig it
