The Sound of a Folder

Ahhh yes. The walk and talk of a knife.

Sebenza closing is unrivaled. That ting is something you just don't usually hear from a solidly built mechanical item. Not sure why it does it but it does.

I am fond of the sound of my ultratechs and excalibur lol.

I own several hard use folders and my favorite is deep pitched sound that my Satu Ti Ti makes when the lockbar engages the blade. I also like the sound my El Patron flipper has while the blade is opening.

The first folder that made me appreciate the sound, or think more about the sounds of folders, was the Kershaw Drone. When I close it, one of the metal thumbstuds hits the metal of the liner lock. I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that though.

Never gave it much thought until I got the Spyderco Brad Southard. Now I notice it in all my EDC knives. Authority, solid build and strength sound off when opening and closing this knife. One of the best EDC knives. IMO

I agree here. Sebenza sounds great, but the southard just sounds so nice.

My Pretium makes a very different sound than anything else I have. My Norseman makes a sound like a golf club smacking a good drive. Both very satisfying lol.

I love the sound of my Kershaw Knockout. When the Speedsafe kicks in and the sub-frame lock meets the blade tang...it's music to my ears.

I think the Sebenza has one of the most distinct 'thock' lockup sound I've ever heard. That was until I heard the more authoritative 'thock' of a Sebenza25. Assisted Kershaws have a shhhhh'clack' as the speed safe engages and the lock slides in. Thought it was only me that paid attention to the sounds a knife makes. Glad to see I'm not alone. :)

I love a nice sounding folder. I don't really look for that in a blade as a feature, but it's certainly nice if the sounds match the blade.

I like the solid snap on my ZT0561 and the lock engaging on my Benchmade Adamas. The Mini-Grips that I have also have nice little 'pings'.

Now I'm sitting around opening and closing a bunch of frame locks, lockbacks, compression locks, Axis locks. liner locks.... listening to the way they all sound different, as they go into lockup. Even ones of the same model seem to have their own sound.

Let's just say I remember cars with no emissions and gas at 29¢ a gallon, the cars and trucks of the 60s and early 70s were monsters, 455 cubic inch fuel and air pumps, that's around 7.5 liters,(7,500 cc) for you young'uns.

Yeah, Ted, you wish. I bought gas at 18cents/gallon. First car was a '55 Chevy; actually had two of them. The 1955 Pontiac Chieftain was about the most beautiful car of that time...was about one block long and gorgeous. ...and loved those bug-eye Sprites and old open MG's and tear-drop Porsches and 3-liter Jag coupes. They were something that no longer exists.
Used to watch Don Garlits and his Allison jet-powered Green Monster dragster run up in Michigan; now he has his old car museum a few miles from my door.
Worked on old race car engines at Waterford, Mich race-track, and changed 3/4 cams on weekends.
Oh yeah, I remember well.

I'll see ya at noon...in the street...out front of the livery... Be there or ride out. :) (Youngster, my foot!)

Don

My loudest is my Spyderco Gayle Bradley. BUT when I throw my Benchmade 810 open, everyone knows it's party time.

My bluephin is all metal, full ti handles, backspacer and runs on IKBS.

I'm not sure if that's the reason why but it has a metallic noise when its flipped like the sound of a sword being drawn and it gets me every time.

Being a HUGE Bluephin fan, I can say that the "swisk" sound the IKBS makes when it opens is just perfect......kinda like the sound the ATM makes when it pumps out money into your hand!!

Ok good its not just me! Haha

I find that the full ti ones are a bit more noisy than the bolstered models too.

I too love the sound of a folder locking. My favorite at the moment is my Military. I'm not sure what it is about it but it just has a satisfying sound. I tried to share this joy with my wife.... she tried .....but I could see it in her eyes, that look that tells me that she loves me enough to listen to my ramblings about knives but she thinks I am crazy. :D She is slowly coming over to our side though. I saw that she was using the Kiridashi that I made for her more and more.:)
