The stockman punch thread

Yes, they're stainless. I guess with only two versions in cv, they can just use the same punch.
I just realized the punch on my CV Stockman is SS...did not occur to me when I bought it. It is fairly new and the other two blades just started a light patina but the punch looks all shiny :) There are some SWEET examples in this thread I need to get me one.

If memory serves all the current Case CV Punch Stockman knives have stainless punch blades.

Now, finding a Case punch stockman with all stainless blades. That took some looking. The only one I've seen is in their Carhartt line. G-10 covers. According to their promo announcement, they used a special Scotch-Brite finish.

That Carhartt edition looks pretty nice! Is that a different grind on that or just the light playing tricks?

The grinds are similar. The blade shapes and thicknesses are a bit different. The Carhartt model is a bit thicker and heavier in all it's dimensions. Case also says they reshaped the tangs to reinforce the blades on the Carhartt model.

I don't have the stockman, buy my Case Carhartt Backpocket has the "as ground" finish on the blade. Looks to be the same on that one.

To be technically correct, every knife I have with a punch is either an equal end cattle knife or an SAK, so no real stockman patterns. But these have clip and sheepfoot (except one) along with the punch, so both useful and fun to look at, anyway.

While I love this last knife, don't equal ends look funny as jacks? I mean, "What happened to the other blade??"

Moore Maker 2305 punch Stockman in buffalo horn. Everything I've seen says these were made by Camillus. I'm proud of this knife for surviving whatever knife chamber of horrors it was subjected to. It was trashed. Rusted shut, the scales were a dingy gray I didn't know buffalo horn was capable of. Plenty usable now, had a lot of fun carrying it a couple days ago.

Been looking hard at that Case 18 pattern with punch. Can anyone with the Case 18 stockman pattern with punch answer:
1. Were either the main or the punch blade tips proud when new in box?
2. Did any of the blades have shallow nail nicks? I've got a couple Case knives that came with annoyingly shallow nail nicks.

It's the same closed length as last year's GEC 29. I didn't get one of those GEC 29s and now they're hard to come by. Is it worth the premium over the case 18 with punch? I understand that it's not quite apples-to-apples (different handle shape, spring count).

Looking forward to seeing some analysis on the 2019 GEC 29 vs the Case 18 since nobody has done that yet on this thread!

No shallow nicks or proud tips on my 2019 model. Did file the sheepsfoot kick a bit when new but only to tuck the blade a bit further when closed. Its one of my favorites, and for less than half what you will spend on the GEC. One thing to note is mine also came with a cv punch, I've read that some are stainless even with cv blades. Some recycled pics i have on hand..20200809_202126_copy_612x816.jpg 20200618_172931_copy_1305x979.jpg

Mine have stainless punches with carbon blades. I haven't been able to justify the purchase of a third one, but that all cv in black sure looks nice!

The fit and finish isn't perfect, but it's a perfectly serviceable working knife. (I consider blade rub to be a cosmetic issue, but I know it bothers some folks)

The 29 has a wider styled clip blade, and three springs, so it has an all around beefier feel to it.

I love both of these knives and the Case 18 Punch has been one of my most carried for the past couple years. I just picked up a new one pictured below with the GEC #29 for comparison.

Differences include:

- GEC has half stops
- Nail nicks are about the same
- Case punch is shorter
- Case clip is slender — muskrat (or CA muskrat??)

Out of the box, neither the main nor punch blades were proud. Like seemingly all new modern Case knives, though, the blades had a pretty large burr and the action was gritty. They sure sharpen up and clean up nice though. Once you get them clean and oiled, the action is super smooth.

Here are some comparison pics (hopefully they upload!)...

Wow - seeing them side by side really puts your and r8shell’s feedback into perspective. The main blade of the Case is definitely much more slender than the GEC. The GEC surely looks to be a beefier knife.

Really want to follow the old adage “get both!”. :)

thanks for the pics!

Yeah I think I follow that adage too often! :)

FYI with both of my 18PUs, the punch hangs on the sheepsfoot. The blades and the punch are all snappy, but if you close the punch slowly it hangs up and needs a little assistance. That doesn’t bother me but I understand why it bothers other folks.

I’ve uploaded a picture that shows what I described.

Is that severe blade rub between the punch and sheepsfoot or something else going on in the joint?
I ordered the smooth black synthetic one last night. I got it to use. I don’t really care about the cosmetic effects of blade rub, but if it’s so severe that the spring can’t overcome the friction... seems like Case needs to address that. In my mind blade rub should really only happen when you’re opening the knife. The rub comes when your fingernail is trying to get a purchase in the nail nick.
